IJuly means we’re halfway into winter and the cold days suggest staying in rather than going out. It’s Netflix and chill and emphasis on the chill—not the type you’d prefer, either. But there’s no need to hibernate this winter—whether you’re just plain cold or spent your savings on heating, there are plenty of things to do in the City of Sails that are free! Yep, you read that correctly—FREE!
Without further ado, here are nine free things to do in Auckland this July to beat your winter blues.
#1 Matariki On The Waterfront
Spend some time with the family and head to the waterfront to wander through market stalls full of crafts, clothing and food. You’ll be kept entertained with fabulous street performers as well as an incredible light installation by Angus Muir Design.

#2 Te Ara Rama Matariki Light Trail
Wrap up warm and add a little magic to your life at the Te Ara Rama Matariki Light Trail. Held at Maybury Reserve, you’ll find thousands of fairy lights, music and creativity across nine themes.

#3 Queens Wharf Fanzone
Embracing the roar of the All Blacks and the squeak of The Lions? Then the Queen’s Wharf Fanzone is where you want to be! July 1 sees it join forces with the Matariki Festival and on July 7 you’ll find Motown band, Motor City Family Funk. There are also photographic exhibitions and rugby trophies (including the Web Ellis). You can head there to watch the test matches in amongst the crowds.

#4 Te Taumata Kapa Haka
Indulge in some Maori performance arts with some of the country’s best kapa haka groups, including Ngā Tūmanako, Te Mātārae, Orehu and Te Wharekura o Hoani Waititi. Yep, The Cloud is set to roar with this free event.

#5 Winter Onsieland At Cakes N Ladders
Auckland’s cold crisp mornings can make you dread getting changed out of your PJs, so we suggest you stay in them! Cakes N Ladders are offering a free hour of games if you show up in your onesie. Get cosy and get board game-ready!

#6 Omega Plus Dog Walk
Have you been neglecting those dog walks lately? We’re sure your puppy will forgive you if you take him out to this dog walking event! Jordan from Define Canine will be sharing some top tips on dog training skills before heading out for a morning stroll. With Pets and Pats vouchers for attendees and Bark Bag shouting some morning brews after, meet some new dogs and maybe their humans too.

#7 First Thursdays: The Mad Hatter
Take a trip down the rabbit hole to what is the weird and wonderful of K’ Road. Spot the drag Queen of Hearts at the St Kevin’s Arcade Tea Party, soak up some jazz tunes by Auckland City Scoundrels, browse through Twice as Nice and The Cross Street Markets and be mesmerised by Nocturnal’s art installations. With K’ Road businesses staying open for the night, grab yourself some deals while you’re there!

#8 Drop In Bike Skills And Maintenance
Do you bike to work? Bike for fun? Or haven’t learnt the art of cycling just yet? Drop by to The Cloud this July because here’s your chance to do just that! Here, you’ll find an on-site mechanic to tend to your bike needs and they’ll also share some helpful tips to ensure your bike runs smooth this winter. Small group riding sessions on the waterfront will run on a first come, first served basis. Borrow a bike, or bring your own and just have a blast riding around The Cloud.

#9 Bastille Day
Celebrate all things French with festivities, music, food, painting and even a treasure hunt this Bastille Day. On this day you shouldn’t feel guilty about the French pastries you’ve eaten! Keen to learn the beautiful language? Alliance Française, will be teaching 40-minute language classes for the curious Frenchie.
