Shake Up Your Taste Buds With A Visit To Gochu’s Epic Once-A-Month Test Kitchen

By Kathryn Steane

Auckland, we've just discovered an epic new dining experience you need to know about, and it happens to involve one of our favourite restaurants—the incredibly delicious Gochu.

Commercial Bay's home of creative and downright drool-worthy Korean is running a Test Kitchen on the first Tuesday evening of every month and trust us when we say, it's going to inject a whole lotta fun (and a whole lotta flavour) into your week.

Helmed by the uber-talented Jason Kim (co-owner and executive chef), you won't know what you're getting until the night and most of the dishes may never make it onto the permanent menu. Basically, if you're into surprises and unique, one-of-a-kind eats, this is an event you definitely do not want to miss.

Now if you know anything about Jason, you'll know he likes to have fun with his food and this is exactly what Gochu's Test Kitchen is all about. The first event on April 6 was a perfect example, and went down an absolute treat with those diners lucky enough to attend.

Taking taste buds to bold new places, the menu featured a deliciously crispy kimchi and mung bean pancake washed down with seaweed and smoked oyster broth, followed by a whole crispy-skinned poussin stuffed with marinated rice (served on a bed of oozy cheese sauce, no less)—pickled green chilli, onion and radish—and fried gizzards with Gochu mayo (yes, gizzards), with a lush white chocolate custard cake to finish. Knocked back with a couple of cocktails, this was hands-down the best use of a Tuesday night we've had in quite some time.

But don't just take our word for it, grab your own slice of the Test Kitchen action by booking in for the next one on May 4. We guarantee you'll be (pleasantly) surprised.
