The always entertaining, eclectic strip that is K Road is home to new cocktail bar and eatery, Madame George. Inspired by New York dive bars, it boasts a delightful mix of expertly made cocktails, simple food done well and a relaxed, cool vibe.
We love stepping foot in an establishment only to be greeted like you’re visiting an old friend in their home. And that’s exactly what will happen. Owner Matthew Fitzgerald makes you feel like you’ve been a local at this newly opened spot for years, he’ll make recommendations and ensure your picks are served swiftly.
Madame George’s interior was designed by his business partner Pablo Arrasco Paz, who has created a space with a good looking collection of reclaimed wood and industrial lighting. There’s generous road side seating—ideal for watching the colourful people that inhibit the street. Or if you’d rather hunker down inside, there’s a shared table next to the bar, and more intimate seating down a thin corridor, moody thanks to the candle lighting.
While only a small handful of dishes make up the Madame George menu, that’s all that’s needed. Each dish has a loose Asian influence—to snack on there’s crispy taro chips served alongside a spicy kimchi salsa, sliders filled with hoisin pork and house pickled red cabbage. The Taiwanese popcorn chicken is crispy on first bite, tender within and pairs perfectly with wasabi Japansese mayo. On the larger side there’s a spicy beef salad, and a warming bowl of prawn laksa for those impending chilly winter evenings.
Cocktail options are plentiful, each one reflective of the season. There’s VB in a can, and a good wine list too. Fitzgerald says the menu, both food and drink, will be forever-changing. They’ll be sourcing produce that is of the time, and using ingredients that they take a fancy to.
Madame George is a much-needed addition to K road—a fine new venue, perfect for an after-work cocktail and bite to eat with friends, or the ultimate start to a looming night out. Cheers to that!
