It’s only two weekends ‘til Christmas, folks! Make the most of the calm before the storm this weekend by hitting up some great Auckland events. Whether you’ve got a spot of Christmas shopping to do, want to try a bit of yoga, or keen to get on the outdoor cinema buzz, you’ll find something to do this weekend in our fair city.
Ready for it? Here’s our line up of things to do in Auckland this weekend…
Meet Santa | Butterfly Creek
If you’re yet to get in the festive spirit, a date with the big S.C will fix that. Butterfly Creek is playing host to Santa on Friday, Saturday and Sunday—the perfect excuse to get the little ones out of the house for a morning. The Dinosaur Kingdom, Butterfly House and all the other attractions will be in full swing, and the bearded man himself is set to make a special appearance at the Crocodile Encounter at 1pm each day. Kids, don’t forget to whisper Santa your wish list. Parents, cross your fingers that he delivers.
Christmas Lights, MOTAT Nights | MOTAT
And if you still need a Christmassy nudge, make your way to MOTAT’s Christmas celebration this weekend. Sip on mulled wine (or munch on cake pops) while taking in the magical atmosphere of live entertainment, outdoor movies, tram rides and fairy lights good enough to give Franklin Road a run for its money. A $2 entry fee will go towards buying gifts for children at either the Auckland’s Woman’s Refuge or Starship Foundation.
Pascoes NZ Tennis Championships | ASB Tennis Arena
Fancy a spot of tennis? Watch the country’s top tennis players battle it out at the Pascoes NZ Tennis Championships. The semis and finals are taking places at the ASB Arena, where you’ll no doubt be treated to some world-class tennis action.
Thursday 10th December
Takapuna Christmas Carnival | Takapuna
Keeping up with all things Christmas, this year’s Takapuna Christmas Carnival looks like it’s going to be a cracker. The carnival kicks of at 4.30pm at Hurstmere Green with market stalls, free face painting, dancers, live music and much, much more. Some of Auckland’s best food trucks will be there, dishing up their mouth-watering creations. Treat yourself to a slice of pie from The Pie Piper ladies or grab Puha & Pakeha pulled pork roll.

Silo Cinema (Elf) | Silo Park
Silo Cinema is back! Christmas movie favourite, Elf, will be kicking off Silo Park’s festive season this Friday. Do a bit of shopping at the Silo Markets then settle down with a food truck feed to watch the film at 9pm. Giggles galore, guaranteed.

Britomart Day Out | Britomart
We’ve been eagerly waiting for this day, and it’s finally here! Rally up the fam/friends/flatties and get yourself downtown for Britomart Day Out this Saturday. Starting at 8am with a maaaasive City Farmers’ Market on Gore Street, you’ll be able to fill your baskets with all sorts of fresh produce, baked goodies, and crafts. A handful of pop-up Britomart boutiques and deals, saving and sales from Britomart stores will help you tackle your Christmas shopping. Live music will keep the energy levels high and the kids will stay entertained with face painting, arts and crafts, and a visit from the man in red.
Ed Sheeran | Mt Smart Stadium
Our favourite ginger Brit (no offence Prince Harry) is back in town! Ed Sheeran will be rocking Mt Smart Stadium this Saturday with his sweet, sweet tunes. Every single song will be performed by Ed and Ed alone (with the occasional support of Passenger, Rudimental and Foy Vance) as he uses his incredible voice, guitar and loop pedals to re-enact his hit music. There are couple of tickets left—pick up yours here.
Coca-Cola Christmas In The Park | Auckland Domain
Hands down one of the jolliest events on the Kiwi Christmas calendar is Coca-Cola Christmas In The Park. In its 22nd year, this free outdoor concert will feature NZ’s top singers, dancers and musicians as they set the tone for a seriously festive few weeks. The event is getting behind Youthline to support young people across NZ so make sure you give a gold coin donation.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra | St James Theatre
There will no doubt be a string of UMO fans who are frothing about this Saturday concert, and we’re among them. Ruban Neilson is bringing Unknown Mortal Orchestra to Auckland for what is set to be a killer show. Kiwi chick, Fazer Daze will get the crowd pumping before UMO performs their catchy beats including ‘Multi Love’, ‘So Good at Being in Trouble’ and ‘Can’t Keep Checking My Trouble’.
Outdoor Movie Season Launch | Smales Farm
Outdoor cinemas are all the rage at the mo, and the Smales Farm Outdoor Movie season is a welcome addition to the summer months. BYO beanbag/picnic blankey/inflatable mattress and settle down to watch ‘Home Alone’ this Saturday evening. At each screening, Food Space will be there with its best food trucks to stop to mid-movie tummy rumbles.
The Coast Collective Markets | Silverdale
Avoid stuffy, claustrophobic malls and head north to The Coast Collective Markets. Held at the Silverdale Rugby Club, these trendy, upbeat markets are full locally made bits and bobs including fashion, jewellery, baby gear, homewares and more. There is a barista on site and plenty of tasty eats in case you’re in need of shopping fuel. More details here.

Hip hop street yoga? It’s a thing, and this Sunday is your chance to see what it’s all about. Lululemon is hosting Yoga. Street. Beat at their Takpuna store, where epic music, yoga and a whole lotta amped up energy will collide on Sunday morning. Sounds like an incredible cause to us. Roll up your yoga mat, hustle a couple of gold coins and be there.
West Lynn Christmas Street Party | West Lynn Shops, Grey Lynn
We love Christmas and we love a good street party, so it makes sense that we’d love the two together. The West Lynn Christmas Street Party is going to be an awesome day of food, music, Cuban carols, dancing, farm animals and festive vibes. Nature Baby will be bringing an ark complete with donkeys, angels, shepherds and a photo booth to snap all the action. Rustle up any shrapnel because there will be a gold coin donation box for Auckland City Mission.
Devonport Craft & Fine Food Market | Devonport
Come rain, hail or shine, the Devonport Craft & Fine Food Market is an event you don’t want to miss this weekend. You’ll find an impressive selection of handcrafted wares and fresh, artisan food—think crusty bread, olive oil, tea, cheese, jam and more. It starts at 10 am so locate a coffee and browse the great stalls.
