The most quintessential of English customs, the concept of high tea originated in the 1800's when Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, complained of being hungry during the late afternoon, so she requested a tray of tea, bread and butter, and cake to be brought to her room. From this, the afternoon tea ritual as we know it was born.
Consisting of a selection of dainty sandwiches (including our favourite cucumber sandwiches), warm scones slathered with jam and cream, bite-sized sweets and savouries, and a fancy cup of tea or a cheeky glass of champagne, Urban List has rounded up the best spots for high tea in Singapore.
Mandarin Oriental Singapore
5 Raffles Avenue, Marina Square, Singapore 039797
Image credit: Mandarin Oriental, Singapore | Supplied
When luxury fashion house SHANGHAI TANG meets Mandarin Oriental, you know tea is going to be more than just a polite affair. Their Moonlit Bloom Afternoon Tea is a masterclass in modern chinoiserie: floral, opulent, and designed for lingering conversations under chandeliers. Inspired by the ginger flower (a recurring motif in SHANGHAI TANG’s design), the menu layers delicate citrus notes and floral infusions into bite-sized creations like the Jade Roll with osmanthus-kissed celtuce, the zesty Moonlit Zest cocoa nib choux, and the tea-forward Pearl Granite with apricot and oolong. Even the desserts read like poetry: the Tang Rose sablé with caramel coconut and the Golden Fan with espresso Chantilly, caramel, and chestnut bring both drama and decadence.
Served with a limited-edition SHANGHAI TANG teapot, every pour feels like theatre in miniature. Available until 31 October 2025 at S$68 per person, it’s a seasonal must for anyone who wants their afternoon tea Instagram to pop with fuchsia, florals, and just the right touch of gold.
