Travelling with a 4-year-old and an 11-month-old isn’t exactly synonymous with relaxation, so when a place manages to make it feel easy, it’s worth talking about.

That’s exactly what we found at Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree. Set within the lush greenery of the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, it’s designed to slow you down from the moment you arrive. And surprisingly, even with two young kids in tow, it worked. Not perfectly (there were still snack negotiations and the occasional meltdown), but in a way that felt manageable and even enjoyable.

The Rhythm Just Works (Even With Naps, Snacks, And Meltdowns)

The biggest win? Location. You’re right next to Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, River Wonders, Bird Paradise, Rainforest Wild ASIA, Curiosity Cove and Exploria which completely changes how you plan your day.

Instead of trying to “maximise” one exhausting outing, we fell into a much more realistic rhythm. Mornings were for exploring (usually fuelled by coffee and mild bribery), afternoons meant heading back to the room for the baby’s nap, and late afternoons were for the pool or a wander. Evenings became surprisingly special too. We even we attempted the Night Safari one night, and while it does require a bit of planning with young kids, there’s something pretty magical about seeing animals after dark. Highly recommend the rhino feeding too.

It’s the kind of flexibility that makes the whole trip feel less like a mission and more like a holiday.

Rooms That Feel Like A Reset (Not Just A Place To Sleep)

Family rooms at Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree aren’t an afterthought, they’re genuinely designed for actual families.

Our setup had a bunk bed (which instantly made my 4-year-old feel like she had won the lottery), enough space for a baby cot, and enough room for all of us to move around without constantly bumping into each other.

The design leans heavily into nature: warm wood tones, soft lighting, and floor-to-ceiling windows that look straight out into greenery. It creates this calm, almost cocoon-like feeling that helped both kids settle faster than expected which, if you’ve ever travelled with children, you’ll know is a big deal.

The Rooftop Pool Is Where Everyone Comes Back To Life

Every day, without fail, we ended up at the rooftop pool as it was the perfect way to cool down after a hot day exploring the parks.

Overlooking the Upper Seletar Reservoir, it’s one of those rare hotel pools that feels peaceful but still totally family-friendly. My 4-year-old could splash around freely, the baby was happy just being in the water, and we could actually sit back for a moment without feeling like we needed to be on high alert the entire time.

I’ll be honest, the pool isn’t huge, there’s no waterslides or splash zones (this is a Banyan Tree property after all) and loungers are limited, but the view certainly makes up for it.

A Kids Club That Buys You Real Downtime

The Rangers’ Club is one of those facilities you think you might use… and then end up relying on.

Designed for little explorers aged 4 to 11, it blends indoor chill zones (think board games, Nintendo Switch, toys and a cosy reading nook) with a line-up of daily activities that lean into nature and sustainability. Expect hands-on workshops, arts and crafts, and interactive “missions” where kids learn to spot wildlife or identify native plants, all while picking up eco-conscious habits in a fun, low-key way.

What really sets it apart, though, is the seamless connection to the outdoors. There’s an awesome adjacent playground complete with climbing structures, slides, and stepping stones where kids can burn off energy, plus programmes that encourage them to engage with the surrounding rainforest environment making it feel more like a mini adventure camp than a kids’ club.

Let’s Talk Food Because This Is Where Trips Can Go Sideways

Food with kids is never straightforward, but this is where the resort (and its location) really delivers.

At the resort itself, Planter’s Shed became our go-to. Breakfast and dinner is a buffet situation with enough variety to keep everyone happy (from local options to kid-friendly staples) plus live stations that make it feel a bit more fun (and distract the kids while you drink your coffee in peace).

If you’re staying a little longer, it’s worth planning a morning at the zoo for Breakfast in the Wild where you can eat alongside animals. It’s one of those uniquely Singapore experiences that kids love (and honestly, adults too).

For something a little more elevated back at the resort, Forage offers a “Harvest-to-Table” experience using ingredients sourced from the rooftop edible garden. This is a great option if you can manage to ditch the kids for a few hours.

And when you just need something fast, familiar, or guaranteed to be eaten? The Mandai precinct is just a short walk away, with casual dining spots, hawker-style options, and a McDonald’s that can absolutely save the day.

The Overall Vibe: Surprisingly Easy

What stood out most is how everything here works with you, not against you. The layout, the proximity to the parks, the facilities: it all comes together in a way that makes travelling with kids feel less like a logistical exercise and more like an actual break.

The resort blends into the rainforest instead of competing with it, which naturally slows things down. You hear birds, see greenery everywhere, and feel just far enough removed from the city to properly switch off (even if your toddler is still asking for snacks every 20 minutes).

Would I Go Back?

Yes, but next time, I’d stay longer. Because once you settle into the rhythm (wildlife in the morning, naps in the afternoon, pool time, easy dinners), you realise this isn’t a place you need to rush through. It’s a place you ease into. And with kids, that makes all the difference.
