Great Northern, arguably Australia's favourite beer, has officially opened the doors to its very first flagship venue right here on the Sunshine Coast.

Northern Grounds is a sprawling $5.1 million reimagining of the former Waterfront Hotel at Diddillibah, perched directly on the Maroochy River.

This is much more than just a pub, it’s a full-blown Queensland experience. Inspired by the great outdoors and long, lazy camping trips, Northern Grounds is all about crackling open fires, coal-kissed feeds, ice-cold beers on the waterfront, and a vibe that’s equal parts laid-back and elevated.

The venue has been completely transformed by the $5.1 million renovation, keeping its iconic wraparound waterfront balcony while adding multiple firepits with communal seating, an outdoor fireplace, and even a dedicated kids’ play area. 

Of course, the real star here is what’s on tap. Choose from 24 taps with a full lineup of Great Northern brews alongside Queensland icons like Balter and Green Beacon, plus Hard Rated for those who like it a little stronger. The food menu leans into that campfire inspiration, with locally sourced beef, seafood fresh from Mooloolah River, pub classics, and hearty share plates that are perfect for pairing with a schooner (or a few).

There’s even a roomy new event space, The Lodge, set to host everything from birthdays to big nights out.

ALH Hotels General Manager Paul Carew says Northern Grounds is a significant investment in the Southeast Queensland region, reflecting Great Northern Brewing Company’s popularity among Queenslanders.

“We’re extremely excited to be opening the doors to Northern Grounds, the latest ALH venue in Queensland and a unique new offering for the region,” Mr Carew said.

“We’re not just opening a pub; we’re creating a destination that truly embodies the spirit of Queensland - mateship, simplicity and that deep connection to our incredible outdoors." 

Northern Grounds officially opened on Friday 15 August and is open seven days a week, from 10am until late.
