The Details
The biggest of Australia’s ‘Big Things’, the Sunshine Coast’s Big Pineapple has been officially reopened and is looking shinier and sweeter than ever.
Standing 16 metres high, the first stage of the Big Pineapple regeneration includes the launch of the fully restored Plantation Train, new cafe serving premium coffee and homestyle food, children’s playground, and viewing platform. And of course, the Big Pineapple is looking extra gleaming and shiny after a full repaint and refresh.
Situated on a 165-hectare site, the Big Pineapple was originally launched in 1971 and in its heyday, the Big Pineapple was one of Australia's most popular tourist attractions, luring over one million visitors annually, including the likes of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
Owner Peter Kendall said he knew that the relaunch of the Big Pineapple had been eagerly anticipated by the Sunshine Coast community.
“The Big Pineapple is undoubtedly the most recognisable tourism icon of the Sunshine Coast and so I am very proud of the team’s work to restore the pineapple to its original glory,” said Mr Kendall.
The reopening of the Big Pineapple is just Stage One of the regeneration project, with public train rides and access to Wildlife HQ on the horizon soon.
The team’s next priority is to complete the renovations inside the heritage-listed pineapple structure and to reopen it for tours in the near future.
Pssst we’ve also heard that the tourist icon’s beloved pineapple parfaits are to return soon. Stay tuned.
