Huch Is A Collective Of Stunning Off-Grid Escapes In The Hunter Valley

Written by: Georgia Condon

With wood-fired hot tubs, breathtaking valley views, and fire pits with custom cooking grills under the stars all set on pristine Wollombi bushland, Huch is home to a luxe trio of stays under two hours from Sydney.

From The Lantern, Billy’s Hideaway and The Canopy, you can expect to spot wombats, kangaroos, birdlife and the friendly cattle that live next door, with the stays just a five-minute drive (or pleasant 20-minute stroll) from the middle of town—but totally isolated from any neighbours or noise.

All stays are completely off-grid (they run off solar power and rainwater) but feel like a luxury experience thanks to designer furniture, handy tech touches, and premium bedding and bathroom details that ensure a comfortable stay.

They’re also dog-friendly (up to 20 kilos, with approval) and kitted out with compact but comprehensive kitchens so you don’t have to leave after checking in—and trust us, you won’t want to.

While there are currently three unique stays available at Huch, we’ve heard there are a couple more launching soon—follow on Instagram to be the first to know when they can be booked.

The Lantern

An architect-designed tiny home with double decks, floor-to-ceiling windows, a custom barbecue set-up and modern bathroom, The Lantern is a stunning stay that’s every bit as beautiful as the surrounding landscape.

At the top of a winding walkway behind The Lantern, an elevated lookout with its own fire pit under a striking rock outcrop is the perfect place to watch the sun set over the valley, with insulated Yeti drinkware supplied to keep drinks cold and Bose speakers to bring your soundtrack of choice along too.

The Lantern is best for couples with its plush king bed, but it can accommodate up to two kids on a pull-out double bed, too. You’ll be cosy with an internal wood-burner, electric blanket and reverse-cycle air con.

Billy’s Hideaway

Elsewhere on the property, Billy’s Hideaway offers many of the same luxe amenities as The Lantern, with a peachy colour scheme inspired by the tones of the surrounding gum trees. This tiny home also has a king bed, plus king single bunk beds for younger kids.

Set on a billabong scene that’s straight out of an Arthur Streeton painting, Billy’s Hideaway also offers a hot tub, barbecue, and spacious deck for watching the kangaroos grazing in the morning sun.

The Canopy

a glamping stay at huch in the hunter valley

With two dreamy canvas tents set on a wooden platform under a historic barn roof, The Canopy is a unique take on glamping that’s kitted out with a full kitchen and bathroom, and comfortable in all weather conditions.

The wood-fired hot tub, open-plan living space, day bed for soaking in the sunshine, and additional camp kitchen make for a memorable experience that’s completely immersed in nature.

The Canopy welcomes two adults and up to three children.

Getting There And Getting In

Huch is just outside the historic village of Wollombi in the Hunter Region, which is a beautiful drive from Sydney along the incredible scenic Tourist Drive 33 that's close to 90 minutes in good traffic conditions.

The property is about five minutes out of town, and easily walkable if you feel like heading to the charming Wollombi Tavern for a few beers and a pub feed.

Once on the property, you will need to do a little bit of off-road driving, but it’s easily accessible for most cars, with each stay's dedicated parking area close to

Mobile reception can be limited in the area, but each stay has great wi-fi; it’s best to save the instructions for access and self-check-in before you arrive.

What's Nearby

Wollombi is the perfect country town for a weekend getaway. It has a pub (the Wollombi Tavern) with a cosy fireplace, full menu and friendly locals; a couple of spots to grab a coffee including the Wollombi General Store and Myrtle and Stone (which also opens on Thursday and Friday evenings); and sightseeing picks including bric-a-brac and antique store The Forge and the historic Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, which has stained glass windows featuring Australian flora and fauna.

If you're hopping in the car, the 1830s-built Laguna Trading Post is a nearby destination for meals and drinks, and where you can stock up on local goodies at the Laguna Village Providore.

Further north, you'll find more charming Hunter Valley towns like Pokolbin and Broke, with plenty of surrounding wineries.
