Some 10 years ago, St Patrick’s Day in Sydney really felt like a bit of a non-event.

If our memory prevails, it was a handful of Irish pubs sporting a couple of green pints, maybe a themed chalkboard out on the pavement with a chirpy little leprechaun caricature, holding an overflowing Guinness, sketched in the corner.

Come 2026 though, March 17 is a swelling celebration of Irish culture that has really embedded itself in Sydney’s cultural calendar. In fact, some 25,000 people are now expected to line the streets around The Rocks for our city’s St Patrick’s Day Parade and festival—mind-blowing numbers if you truly think about it. And this ripple effect really runs itself straight through Sydney’s pubs and bars, where the day has evolved as a reliable marker, a green Christmas, if you will, in the hospo year.

"We’re definitely seeing stronger demand for St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Sydney each year," says Jiordy Pham, Taphouse General Manager.

"Darlinghurst and the Eastern Suburbs has a vibrant Irish community, and over the past few years we’ve noticed St Paddy’s growing from a one‑day occasion into more of a multi-day cultural moment."

Elsewhere, Rozelle's Red Lion pub is expecting to see crowds peak more than ever.

"We’re seeing strong demand for St Patrick’s Day celebrations across our venues, with people really embracing the chance to get together and enjoy the atmosphere at their local pub" adds Charlie Laundy from Laundy Hotels.

"This year we’re leaning into the fun with “Split the G” challenges, Guinness specials, and live entertainment across a number of venues. We’re also encouraging guests to share their Split the G attempts on social media, which always adds to the energy and friendly competition on the day. We’re expecting another big turnout across the network.”

As it stands, close to one million litres of Guinness was produced last year along in the lead up to St Patrick’s Day, according to brewer Lion and you’d be clued in enough to have already heard whispers that the Irish stout is oddly on the rise, finding a new set of consumers among Gen Z drinkers (thanks to industry datasets from CGA, Coles Liquor and IWSR).

Of course, it helps that around 2.5 million Aussies actually identify themselves with Irish heritage, with an 88 per cent increase in Irish exports to Australia occurring over the last five years too.

So, is St Patrick’s Day getting bigger in Sydney? When we speak to our hospo mates and check our inboxes, it certainly feels like it. For now, read on to find the best St Patrick’s Day events happening in Sydney.

If you need an excuse to order another Guinness, this is it. From 1–17 March, Merivale is bringing a little Irish mischief to pubs across Sydney with its take on the legendary Split the G challenge.

Here’s how it works: order a pint of Guinness, line up your first sip so it lands perfectly through the middle of the “G” on the glass, and do it in front of staff. Stick the landing and you’ll score a $10 discounted pint—plus bragging rights to carry through the rest of the night.

The challenge is running at a long list of Merivale locals, including Hotel CBD, Norton’s, Royal Bondi, The DOG, The Vic On The Park, The Newport (Arm’s Bar), Establishment, Coogee Pavilion (Ground Floor), The Alex, The Paddington, Three Weeds and more—so chances are your local is in on the fun.

For a more traditional pub atmosphere over the St Patrick’s Day weekend (13–17 March), make a beeline for Norton’s, Hotel CBD, Royal Bondi or The DOG, where live Irish music and dancing will keep the celebrations humming.
