When a restaurant hands you a hefty 10-page menu, it usually means one thing: they haven’t quite decided who they are. That’s not the case at 24 York, a swish restaurant in the Sydney CBD that puts all its chips on one signature dish: steak frites.

The star of the show is a 220g MB2+ O’Connor Superior Grass-Fed Scotch Fillet, which is the same cut used at Rockpool Bar & Grill Melbourne, whose sister Sydney venue is one of the World’s Best Steak Restaurants.

It’s grilled, sliced into four and served swiftly with golden beef-tallow fries and your choice of peppercorn sauce, chimichurri, umami butter or veal jus, alongside complimentary mustards, an optional crisp green leaf side salad and a velvety New York cheesecake with vanilla ice cream for dessert.

A one-page drinks list with a daily happy hour from 4pm to 6pm rounds out the confident offering, with classic cocktails, a booze-free Drive Home Spritz, beers and a focused lineup of wines from the Yarra, Orange and Barossa—available by the glass, carafe or bottle.

While the menu is small, the dining room is quite the opposite. Spanning 320 square metres in the old Bavarian spot at 24 York Street, the fuss-free steakhouse seats 200 people in its elegant bistro, including 30 bar seats.

24 York comes from hospitality heavyweights Hunter St. Hospitality with a massive portfolio spanning Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, including our favourites The Collective and The Cut Bar & Grill.
