Osteria Mucca is an old-school Italian restaurant inside a former butcher shop in the Australia Street precinct by Paisano & Daughters (the crew behind neighbouring Continental Deli, Mister Grotto and Flora, plus boutique accommodation in their historic row of Newtown shops).

The 50-seat restaurant masters regional classics, family recipes, handmade pasta and in-house butchery across a menu led by Head Chef Janina Allende (previously at Alberto’s Lounge and Pellegrino 2000).

Must-tries include the gnudi with brown butter and sage; lamb tartare with rocket and pecorino; house-made sausage; and the two-person 800g T-bone steak.

Award-winning pastry chef Lauren Eldridge handles the dessert menu, with favourites like a zabaglione with coffee granita and almond biscotti, and a cassata with ricotta, chocolate and candied fruit, as well as housemade gelato.

On the drinks front, Osteria Mucca spotlights wine from small, family-owned Italian vineyards, plus a slow-sipping aperitivo selection and traditional Italian cocktails.
