In its 2026/27 Budget, the Victorian Government has committed a record $1.04 billion investment in road maintenance. That’s more than ever before, but what does it actually mean for road users?

Here's everything you need to know.

What Drivers Can Expect

The unprecedented level of funding is set to repair 200,000 potholes, clean up the state’s 10 busiest freeways, rebuild and resurface arterial roads, maintain bridges, fix traffic lights, and repair and replace signs.

70 percent of the allocated investment will be funnelled to repairing roads in regional Victoria, where heavy weather and flooding events over the past four years have significantly damaged network conditions.

A dedicated ‘clean up’ package comprises $36.9 million of the overall investment, which will remove 200,000 graffiti tags, clear up rubbish, and mow along major roadways.

Which Roads Are Getting Upgraded?

Regular users of any of these 10 roads can look forward to seeing the upgrades:

  • Monash Freeway

  • Princes Freeway West

  • Western Freeway

  • West Gate Freeway

  • Hume Freeway

  • Calder Freeway

  • Western Ring Road

  • South Gippsland Freeway

  • Mornington Peninsula Freeway

  • Tullamarine Freeway

The announcement builds on last year’s road maintenance project—where 187,000 potholes and 127,000 square metres of graffiti were targeted statewide—with a 6.5% increase in investment.
