Come in ground control, come in ground control, one of the most gorgeous eateries in town has just landed on the North Shore. Say hello to your latest obsession, Major Tom—a wicked new eatery that’s set to have the whole town talking.
The brilliant minds behind the beloved Hello Friends + Allies, Little Sister and the legendary Winona Forever have spread the love even further, blessing Albany with their latest and greatest. Foodie extraordinaire (or should we say artist) Francesca Mazza and Aaron Carson have unleashed their signature sparkle on Major Tom. With a bright, spacious modern fit-out, a step inside the completely solar-powered space will bring you face to face with an epic mural spanning the length of the eatery. The work of local Kieran Donelly, the sprawling piece took a whopping 200 hours to complete. Of course, we wouldn’t expect anything less from Francesca, whose background as a pastry chef has resulted in dishes which dominate the Auckland food scene.
Major Tom himself is a fitting reference to the legendary David Bowie. Found on the corner of Apollo and Orbit Drive, there’s no doubt the menu is out-of-this-world brilliant. With each dish leaving the kitchen a visual masterpiece, you’re going to want to have your phone at the ready.
Our top pick is the indulgent creamy mushroom. This gem features a variety of mushrooms smothered in creamy goodness, with the crunch of nuts, celery and porcini dust all encased within a spinach crepe served alongside a poached egg, it’s love at first bite!
If you’re in the mood for a sweet treat, look no further than the insane dulce de leche French toast. A sculpture-worthy dish, it stars thick golden French toast, topped with caramelised peach, mascarpone, berries, vanilla meringue drizzled with organic maple syrup it’s the brunch game-changer we didn’t know we needed.
Or, opt for the avocado bruschett: black brioche topped with whipped feta, avocado, pomegranate, served alongside a poached egg and prosciutto it’s sure to have you quickly planning round two.
From out-of-this world to under-the-sea, take a dive and give the soft shell crab benedict a try. A visual feast, you’ll find squid ink brioche stacked with crab alongside poached eggs slathered in red curry hollandaise with broccolini, you’ll be the food envy of all.
Decked out with meringues and caramel sauce, the chilli cinnamon, or salted caramel creations take the humble hot choccy to new heights.
Every bit a masterpiece from the fit out to the eats, Major Tom is the epic eatery we didn’t know we needed.
