How To Live It Up Large In Takapuna
It's a shore thing.Posted by The Urban List Auckland on Monday, 14 May 2018
Experience Choc Overload At House Of Chocolate
It might seem backwards to kick things off with dessert but trust: House Of Chocolate deserves the top spot on your Takapuna bucket list. The café is like something out of a Roald Dahl book with chocolate, chocolate and even more chocolate. Think: decadent cake, gooey pudding, silky mousse and an unmissable chocolate ball that cracks open to reveal a mouth-watering brownie. Oh and their signature waffles are not to be missed with flavours such as strawberry s’mores, banana peanut butter and—you guessed it—chocoholic.
Soak In Ocean Vibes At Regatta Bar
It’s only appropriate to devour fresh seafood when you’re overlooking the ocean. No one knows this better than nautical-themed Regatta. The bar-slash-eatery oozes relaxed, seaside vibes with views of the Hauraki Gulf and beyond—it’s the perfect vantage point of Rangitoto Island. Start your visit with oysters before digging into the likes of shellfish risotto, clam chowder or Szechuan-peppered squid. Alternatively, graze the day away with one of their signature platters. The mega “catamaran” platter will keep you going well into the evening.
Make The Most Of The Stunning Beach
Popular with locals and out-of-towners alike, there’s always something going on at Takapuna Beach. Pack your togs and go for a swim or embrace the calm waters by stand-up paddleboard or kayak. Back on land, go for a leisurely stroll along the beach or find a pozzy on the sand for a picnic. The Volvo XC40 is the perf accomplice for a day at the beach with heeeaps of boot storage and even the option of a custom-made dog harness so you can bring your fur child along!
Grab An Ice-Cream From Takapuna Beach Café
Forgot to pack the picnic hamper? Fear not! Takapuna Beach Café has your back (or should we say stomach?) with their epic eats. Embracing a philosophy of using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, the seasonal menu will have you coming back all year around. Expect the likes of scampi omelette, apple crêpes and kingfish ceviche (drool). Dine at the café or grab something to go from The Store. The homemade gelato selection is out of this world—espec the unmissable chocolate honeycomb.
Take A Stroll To Milford
Now that you’re fuelled up, it’s time to get your walk on. Walk from Takapuna’s boat ramp to Milford beach or vice versa—it will take you about 30 minutes each way. Marvel at the beautiful houses lining the coastline and soak in views of the Hauraki Gulf. Be sure to wear decent shoes because there’s a fair bit of rock-hopping involved. Pro tip: bring your camera so you can get a selfie in front of the pretty purple flower wall.
Devour Centro’s Fried Chicken Waffles
If you’re anything like us, chances are you’re ready to eat… yet again! Takapuna newcomer Centro is shaking up Auckland’s brunch scene with its oh-so Instagrammable dishes. The menu stars modern Kiwi classics with hints of Korean influence. We’re particularly fond of the vegetarian-friendly burger with a mushroom patty, halloumi and a matcha-infused bun. There’s also the dreamy kimchi arancini, pork bao and ever-popular fried chicken waffles. We’ll have one of each, thanks!
Jump Into Lake Pupuke
Takapuna is so much more than a beach, y’know? It’s also home to the equally stunning Lake Pupuke. Formed by a volcanic eruption more than 150,000 years ago (!!), the lake is a popular spot for paddle boarding, rowing and swimming. Jump off the wharf into the cool waters or kick-it lakeside with a picnic. Here you’ll also find the Pumphouse Theatre which is known and loved for plays, musicals and outdoor Shakespeare in summer.
