So, you’ve probably already noticed that Anzac Day falls on a Saturday this year. And while for most public holidays, the government observes the day off on the following weekday, Anzac Day in Queensland follows a different set of rules.

Why Is Anzac Day Different?

Anzac Day is held annually on 25 April to commemorate the 1915 Gallipoli landing and honour the soldiers who have served, fought and sacrificed within the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. It is a national day of remembrance, with the public holiday in place to allow the community to come together and reflect, particularly at a dawn service.

Will Queensland Get An Extra Public Holiday For Anzac Day 2026?

While New South Wales premier Chris Minns has confirmed NSW will be getting an extra public holiday alongside WA and ACT, Queensland will not be following suit. As confirmed by premier David Crisafulli, Anzac Day will only be observed on Saturday 25 April this year.

“It’s really important that people keep that day as being sacrosanct, and that we pause and reflect on what it’s about,” said Crisafulli.

What About Next Year?

Now, you might be thinking that means next year we also won’t be having an additional day off but nope—according to the Queensland Government, if Anzac Day falls on a Sunday it will be observed on the following Monday which will be the case in 2027.

Remember, we still have Easter between now and then, with that weekend continuing to be as long as ever from 3 Friday to 6 Monday in April.
