Brisbane/Meanjin is heating up for summer 2025–26. And yes, we know what you’re thinking: Brissie’s always sizzling in summer—what’s new? Well, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) is predicting hotter, wetter, and more humid conditions than usual, meaning our already-dramatic summers are about to level up.

But it’s not all chaos and soggy sandals. Summer storms are a Brisbane staple—loud, dramatic, and over almost as quickly as they arrive, leaving behind cool breezes that make the city feel freshly washed. Luckily, sunshine is still our default and these long, warm days are perfect for early-morning swims, happy hour drinks (in air-con, obvy), and riverside walks at sunset.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor planning to survive in the River City this summer, consider this your insider guide on what to expect for Brisbane’s summer weather—and how to prep accordingly.

What forecast should we expect this summer?

Here at Urban List, we certainly aren’t calling ourselves weather professionals, so what do the real experts have to say? According to BoM, Brisbane is heading into a season that’s a bit hotter and stickier than usual (yikes). Daily maximums are hovering around the low 30s, with the season average hitting 30.4°C, slightly above the long-term norm.

The nights aren’t offering much relief either, settling around 21.5°C, which means you may want to install an air-con if you haven’t already. January is expected to be the real scorcher, with the mercury spiking to its highest point mid-month—last year’s peak hit 37.4°C, and this summer looks ready to follow suit.

Of course, heat alone doesn’t make a Brisbane summer. Humidity (aka public enemy number one) is perched in the 65–70% range. If you’ve been pretending your hair is ‘naturally textured,’ this is the season that’s going to expose you.

But perhaps the biggest headline is the rain. Brisbane’s summer rainfall is tipped to stay well above average—last season delivered 561mm, around 128% of our norm, and 2025 looks determined to keep things wet. Heavy afternoon downpours, rapid-fire thunderstorms and the occasional sideways rain situation are all on the cards.

Early-March’s encounter with ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, which dumped more than 275mm in a single day, was a preview of what these systems can do, and while we’re not guaranteed a repeat event, the potential for intense rain spikes is definitely there.

How to dress, pack and plan ahead

So what does all this mean for your actual life? In short: plan smarter. Schedule your errands, brunches and riverside walks before lunch, when temps are set to be cooler and the UV index is lower. Post-lunch, try to stay indoors to avoid peak heat—and keep an umbrella stashed in your bag at all times for unexpected and dramatic storms.

Hydration is no longer a suggestion—it’s mandatory—so make your water bottle your must-have accessory this summer. And if you’re one of those people who insist storms “never hit my suburb,” this might be the year the city humbles you, so prep accordingly.

Brisbane summer essentials

  • Loose-fitting and light clothes: wear breathable, natural fabrics such as linen and cotton for daytime, and opt for lighter colours to reflect the sun.
  • Sun protection: broad-brim hat, SPF 50+ sunscreen, and sunnies (the UV index often hits very high).
  • Heat relief: carry a rechargeable handheld fan in your bag, and pack an umbrella to protect yourself from the sun as well as the rain.
  • Hydration: a reusable water bottle is a must, especially on heatwave days (insulated with ice is even better).
  • Avoid: synthetic clothing, thick materials, and dark or tight-fitting clothing.

Summer 2025 is coming in hot—literally—so slap on your sunscreen, plug in your fans, and clear some space in your camera roll for epic lightning shots. Brisbane is about to do what it does best.
