Melt Festival Is Taking Over Brisbane With A Five-Storey Pink Duck, River Pride And 100+ Events

The crowning glory of Brisbane’s queer calendar is back for 2026, and Melt Festival is supersizing the celebrations. From 21 October to 8 November, Brisbane/Magandjin will transform into a city-wide celebration of Queer arts and culture, with more than 100 events across 50-plus venues spanning music, theatre, circus, drag, comedy, visual art and community celebrations.

There are plenty of big names and even bigger moments on the program—Courtney Barnett, Melanie C, TEEKS and Jude York are all joining the party—but it's a five-storey-high hot pink visitor that's likely to become the defining image of this year's festival.

International artist Florentijn Hofman is bringing his famous Rubber Duck to Australia for the first time, reimagined for Melt as a 15-metre, five-storey-high hot pink artwork. It'll first bob up on the Brisbane River/Maiwar near the CBD before becoming one of the flagship floats in the River Pride Parade, then settling in near Brisbane Powerhouse for the remainder of the festival. Hofman's giant ducks have previously appeared everywhere from Amsterdam and Hong Kong to Osaka, São Paulo and Pittsburgh, so Brisbane is in some pretty well-travelled company.

And the duck isn't the only reason to head riverside. River Pride Parade returns on Saturday 24 October, this time in a new twilight slot with its colourful flotilla cruising from West End to Brisbane Powerhouse. Expect expanded riverside activations, dedicated viewing precincts and themed party boats including WET ON DECK, Come To Daddy, Splash Out and FUEL, before a free Opening Party keeps things going at Brisbane Powerhouse with DJs and live performances into the night.

In a first for the city, Brisbane Pride's Rally and March and Fair Day will also align with River Pride Parade on the same day, bringing Brisbane's biggest Pride celebrations together for one huge Saturday stretching from Fortitude Valley to New Farm and along the Brisbane River/Maiwar.

Away from the river, Brisbane's globally acclaimed contemporary circus company Circa is premiering Show Me Love, a new Brisbane Powerhouse commission created exclusively for Melt. Rather than sitting back in a theatre seat, audiences will journey through the Powerhouse's hidden spaces and winding corridors, following Circa's acrobats and guest artists before the immersive experience culminates in a spectacular finale inspired by club culture.

Another major debut is Mr First Nation, a new competition from producer Ben Graetz following the success of Miss First Nation in 2025. Celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander drag king performers and Blak excellence, the inaugural event will feature two heats before a glittering grand final during Melt's opening weekend.

Brisbane locals can get amongst the art themselves with Onesie World, a participatory work from artist and fashion researcher Adele Varcoe and Queer First Nations artist Dylan Mooney. Free sewing workshops will run from 5 to 23 October, with participants helping create 1,000 onesies featuring Mooney's print. On River Pride day, they'll be released back into the community for free on a first-in-first-dressed basis, turning the riverfront into one massive wearable artwork.

Music lovers aren't missing out either. Grammy-nominated, multiple ARIA Award-winner Courtney Barnett will bring her Creature of Habit tour to Brisbane, while Melanie C celebrates her ninth studio album Sweat. Māori soul singer TEEKS will debut new music, including My Boy, while Queensland singer-songwriter Jude York returns home following his breakout year.

Returning favourites include Melting Pot, once again teaming up with QUIVR to spotlight local Queer voices across art, fashion, music and theatre, and cult-hit Queer PowerPoint, where presenters hijack the humble corporate slideshow for hilariously niche obsessions, hot takes and gloriously wild deep dives.

And this is a city-wide festival in every sense. Queer the Town will spread the celebrations into Fish Lane, Fortitude Valley, Howard Smith Wharves and Queen's Wharf, with participating restaurants, bars and entertainment venues joining the program alongside pop-ups and hidden performances.
