Yes ladies and gentleman, you read correctly—at the Mountview Alpaca Farm in Canungra, just an hour out of town, you can hang out with an alpaca. Cue the ‘awwwwww’ moment.
Located on the grounds of O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards, this farm is home to a whole herd of fluffy alpacas. And because they’re pretty friendly critters (these ones are even trained to be therapy animals), if you’re keen to get up close and personal, you can take one for a stroll, with ample selfie opportunities along the way. After being stood down for the lockdown period (we're joking, they just got a bit lonely), the alpacas are once again ready to picnic, though you will have to wait a while longer for any post-picnic wine tasting at the vineyard next door.
The hard part about getting to hang out with the alpacas will be choosing what fluffball you’d like to walk. With unique names like Ed Sheeran, Pancake, Snowball and Tim Tam, the decision is anything but easy. Once you’ve found your soulmate though, you can set off on a wander around the grounds with your new best friend in one hand, alpaca food in the other (they can be greedy, so watch out) and enjoy your 15, 30 or 60 glorious minutes of bonding time.
If you feel like you just haven’t had enough time to immerse in the farm life, you can also book a vineyard picnic basket, and add wine, beer or soft drink at the farm. The picnic basket includes a delicious selection of cold meats and salads, marinated vegetables, cheese, dips, crackers and an ice cream to top it all off, but you will need to bring your own blanket or chairs. So, after you’ve made a new furry friend for life, snag a spot by the water’s edge, lay out your picnic and enjoy the vineyard surroundings, wine in hand optional.
