A new kind of workout has arrived in Newstead, one that will get you sweating through a full body burn. A US fitness phenomenon, Rumble Boxing first landed on our shores last year, opening in West End, but Newstead will be only their third Queensland location (you’ll also find one in Broadbeach), though there’s plenty more locations to come.
Combining boxing and strength training, the 45-minute workouts here are designed around specially designed aqua boxing bags, which reduce the impact on your body when you throw a hefty punch—and if you’ve boxed before you will absolutely notice the difference. We gave it a go and not only was it much easier on the knuckles (and shoulders), but the lower impact also meant we punched harder, working up a hell of a sweat.

No need to be a boxing pro before you sign up though, because each class starts with a bit of coaching on boxing form, after which the high energy instructor (seriously, they are caffeinated) will take you through a high intensity circuit, with the moves also shown on LED screens around the room. There’s a variety of different classes on the timetable, but you can expect to spend some time on both the bags and at the weight stations on the other half of the room. And yes, of course there’s heart-pumping music played through a mega-watt sound system.
Don’t worry if you rate yourself pretty low on the fitness scale, because classes are set up so you can go at your own pace, whether that’s beginner or ready to enter the ring. They’ve also got gloves available to hire and wraps for sale, though you can bring your own. And if you need more encouragement, celebs like Sylvester Stallone, Kendal Jenner and David Beckham have been known to frequent Rumble—that’s endorsement enough for us.
