Props to the fiesta gods who, with a little tasty alliteration, created one of our favourite days of the week: Taco Tuesdays. Or Taco Wednesday, or Taco Tuesday, or well, any day of the week ‘cause we love tacos and we’ll take any excuse to eat them.
For all our fellow taco lovers out there, to save you time we've rounded up where you can find the best tacos on the Gold Coast for cheap.
Hidden down a laneway arcade off Burleigh's James Street, this south-of-the-border-inspired, vibrant outdoor joint is right up our alley. Kicking boring tacos to the curb with tradition and authenticity in all the right places, Hail Mary serves up a range of starters, creative tacos, tostadas and quesadilla as well as Mexican desserts to round out the meal. Pop in on a Tuesday and you can snag any taco for just $6—from snapper and mango to cajun fried chicken and pulled jackfruit, the hardest decision you’ll make is choosing which flavours.
El Camino Cantina
We couldn’t write about the best tacos on the Gold Coast without including Tex-Mex superstar El Camino Cantina. As tempting as they are, don’t fill up on the bottomless baskets of complimentary tortilla chips—save your precious stomach space for their legendary tacos. On Taco Tuesdays, stuff yourself silly with $2 tacos or larger $4 tacos with the purchase of a drink. We’re not complaining.
Taco Thursdays at Margarita Cartel
This unabashedly bright and little bit cliché eatery is peppered with colourful chairs, mini cactus and Mexican tapestry, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. At Margarita Cartel, expect modern Mexican street food with a South American twist, flowing margaritas and a damn good Taco Thursday deal, of course. Yes, we said Thursday, not Tuesday. Your favourite cartel crew sling up $5 tacos every Thursday and we’re talking delish combos like tempura fish, agave sticky pork and crunchy cauliflower.
Taco Wednesdays at Goodness Gracias
Now, here we’ve got a different one: Taco Wednesday. That means cheap tacos almost every night of the week and we sure ain’t complaining. Goodness Gracias is a cute-as-a-button, bright pink casual eatery which has quickly gained a rep as some of the best vegan Mexican around. Meat-eaters and plant-lovers united will love this drool-worthy Mexican, which serves up $4.50 tacos, including goodies like Haiwaiian chicken, plant-based duck and smoky chipotle jackfruit.
Taco Wednesdays at Caracara Cantina
Caracara—named after the majestic falcon on the Mexican flag—is a low-key tequila bar which serves up some epic authentic Mexican fare. 90% of the menu starts with a vegan foundation so plant-based eaters will have plenty of options and meat-lovers can add their choice of protein. On a Wednesday (yes, not Tuesday) swing by and grab 3 tacos for $15 and you’ll soon learn why this is one of the best Mexican joints on the Gold Coast.
True taco enthusiasts know that Mexicali in Nobby Beach dishes up some of the best tacos on the Gold Coast. Special mention to those heavenly haloumi and bean-filled pockets of goodness along with seven other options you can choose from at $6 a pop on Taco Tuesdays. You may want to lock in your seat right this second because this place gets super busy and with damn good reason.
What’s better than one taco? That would be two tacos, of course. The legends at Tupe Aloha Bar & Grill have made it easy for you, with their cheeky $5 Taco Tuesday special meaning you can slam as many of those bad boys as you want, without digging too deep into your wallet. Choose from beef, pork, lamb, vegetarian or mango chicken.
La Diosa Mexicana
Tucked away on Circle On Cavill in Surfers Paradise, La Diosa Mexicana is making your taco dreams come true with drool-worthy Al Pastor (chicken or pork) tacos available all day, every Tuesday for just $3 a pop. It’s a firm yes from us.
Beach Burrito Company
Down south is where you need to be this Taco Tuesday, thanks to Beach Burrito Company's cheeky $3 taco menu with one of the biggest ranges we’ve seen. You can order up a selection of taco dreams like shredded beef, chickpea, chilli, fish, haloumi, several chicken choices, pork and tofu. Plus, if you get to Beach Burrito Company during Happy Hour from 4pm to 6:30pm, you can match those tasty tacos with some $6 frozen margaritas. That's what we call a win-win.
It’s not all stellar cocktails and good tunes at QT Gold Coast’s Stingray Lounge. Did you know every Tuesday from 5pm 'til late also happens to have the aforementioned frivolities, plus you can slam down as many $4 tacos as your heart desires? Drool over grilled fish, Cuban style pork belly and tofu.
Get down to California Tacos on a Tuesday to start inhaling their tasty tacos at just $5 a piece, all washed down with $5 beers. Or, if you can't make the journey from your house, don't fear, because California Tacos just happens to be UberEats friendly.
If you’re craving some insanely delicious vegan tacos on a Tuesday, then head to Greenhouse Canteen's Miami or Coolangatta eateries. At just $5 per taco and made with housemade raw nut meat and filled with avocado salsa, pickled cabbage, cashew sour cream, and turmeric cheese, devour a couple of these and you’ll agree Greenhouse Canteen was the best thing to ever walk into your life.
Taco Thursdays At BonBon Bar
Not to be confused with Taco Tuesdays, it would be a crime to leave Bonita Bonita, and some of the best tacos on the Gold Coast, off our list. Taking a well-deserved break during the first half of the week, BonBon Bar swing open their doors for their signature Taco THURSDAY. Our pick? The Pescado (crispy fish with tomato pico, mango crema and queso fresco) or the Calamares (crispy calamari with pineapple chilli jam and cilantro crema); all for a very easy-on-the-wallet $5 each.
Taco Thursdays At Frida Sol
The sister venue of Bonita Bonita, Frida Sol is keeping the tradition alive and serving up their own tasty Taco Thursday deal. From 5pm you can wrap your hands around $5 Classico Tacos, $5 Cerveza and wash it all down with $5 sangria. Pull up a stool on the balcony and breathe in the sea air (taco in hand, of course).
More of a pizza fan? No judgement here. We've eaten our way through the best Italian on the Gold Coast, so go on, sink your fork in and thank us later.
