The Country Revival Has Hit The Gold Coast, Here’s Where To Go Line Dancing

The country resurgence is here, and it's very real. With it brings a whole underground scene of line dancing classes filled with sass, scootin' and spicy moves. Ever since Beyonce's Texas Hold 'Em country anthem catapulted boot-scootin' into pop culture, line dancing's reached mainstream sweat seshs and at Urban List, we're about it. Today, line dancing classes call breweries, rolling meadows and packed dancefloors home across the Gold Coast/Kombumerri Country.

Whether you're intrigued by the culture, want to take your cowboy boots for a spin or are on the hunt for a new community or exercise sesh, line dancing ticks a lot of boxes. A cool little feature is that line dancing is considered universal. Meaning, you could learn a routine in the back streets of Ashmore, and whip it out on the d-floor in Nashville, Tennessee.

I'll admit I had my preconceptions about line dancing before stepping foot in a class. Though I've eaten my hat, swallowed my words and quickly become a devotee. In particular, I'm in complete awe of the pros who strut their stuff in line dancing class breaks. The aesthetic is next level and the vibe is genuinely joyful. Plus, it's exercise without feeling like it, which is essentially the only way I personally exercise.

Need me to twist your arm any further? Every single class you'll find on this list is completely free. So grab your belt buckle with two hands and staunch walk this way. Here are six of the very best line dancing classes Gold Coast is home to, in North to South order.

How we choose: Cultural relevance, inclusivity, facilities available and real-world buzz from our team and community.

Distillery Road Markets

124 Distillery Rd, Eagleby QLD 4207

Who would've thought that the industrial chic nightlife mecca that is DRM could fill even more of my heart. Then they go ahead and add line dancing to their event mix. Distillery Road Market is the perfect meeting place for Gold Coast locals catching up with Brisbane friends on a week night. AKA it's a good meet-in-the-middle spot.

This is a once a month affair, so keep your eyes firmly locked on the events calendar for its Friday 6pm feature. The crew at Gillys Line Dancing bring such a vibe and given its rare feature, it's a full house every time they roll into town.

These free line dancing classes run three nights a week, with a side of sips and bites. There's everything from line dancing for beginners on the Gold Coast, through to the pros. Set inside Hound And Stag Brewery, it's hard to believe that this sprawling space could fill up but come class time and it's absolutely packed. Each class starts at 6.30pm on the dot. Wednesdays are request night, Thursdays are beginners and Fridays are the party night. Yep, all entirely free.

I've been to the Thursday class run by Marly from Runaway Boots and she's an engaging teacher that'll make you feel right at home. From the first week you'll likely pick up at least one of the routines, but it's also easy to sneak off the dancefloor if you'd prefer to watch for a bit. I felt I was getting the hang of things around week three, and now I'm hooked.
