19 Awesome Things To Do In Melbourne This Weekend

By Steff Tan - 19 Oct 2017

Grab your packet of Zyrtec and hit the streets, ‘cos there are one too many cool things to check out this weekend. Our very own Melbournised Pokémon Go (you’ll get it in a sec), plenty of burger events for #gainz, and you'll finally have the perfect excuse to whip out your Hannah Montana and or Lizzie McGuire merch (the stuff that hasn't seen the light of day since Disney remakes became a thing).

Shower off those Friday night naps with these 18 seriously awesome things to do in Melbourne this weekend.

All Weekend

Wine and virtual reality? Hell yeah. The Stoneleigh Project, hosted by Stoneleigh Winemakers, will be transforming an empty warehouse into an interactive and virtual experience for curious wine enthusiasts. For an idea of what’s on show, a flowing virtual river, complete with ancient river stones and rays of sunlight, will depict the philosophy of winemaking. The event is free and ticketless. But if you feel like something beyond the available samples, glasses will be available at the pop-up bar. And if you’re one of the lucky few, you’ll be invited to a secret dining room and treated to a three-course dinner (with complimentary wine of course).

Where: 524 Flinders Street, Melbourne
When: From Friday 13 October to Sunday 5 November

Last Saturday, St Kilda tapas bar, Lona, introduced bayside to a specially curated weekend brunch menu for lovers of Spanish flavours (with a boozy Melbourne kick). Think insta-worthy poached eggs, crispy pork belly, jalapenos, and smashed avo—of course. On the side, there'll be plenty of Bloody Mary’s to soak up the seaside with. Lona have also thrown in a bunch of brekkie burgers stuffed with wagyu beef patties and truffle salami to satisfy the boyfriends of Instagram. Get around it.

Join Zambrero in their fight against hunger at this year’s meal packing day. Joining ranks with Rise Against Hunger, Plate 4 Plate will be the dynamic duos' fourth annual day, donating their goal of 500,000 nutritious meals to communities in East Timor and Madagascar. All you have to do is join the team either as a volunteer at one of the many packing day locations across Australia, or you can simply volunteer your tum-tum and enjoy a burrito bowl. Usually buying one meal means another one will be donated, but this Friday, two meals will be donated. Hit up their Grab & Go selection and any item purchased means two meals to tackle hunger in our own backyards. Just fifty people can package 10,000 meals so get packin’ and eatin’.

For The Diary

On paper, Zoo Twilights has a pretty compelling argument: live music in the sunshine and helping out an adorable endangered Aussie animal (that's the Eastern Barred Bandicoot)… but did we mention the food trucks and booze?! A mouth-watering selection of foodie gems and pop-up bars will be on hand to help sate your appetite as you bliss out to epic tunes from Ben Folds, The Cat Empire, Cut Copy, The Preatures and more.

Pop-up prosecco bars, Rosé and fresh oysters—what more could you want from the weekend?! Brown Brothers Spring Wine & Food Festival is running over Saturday 18 to Sunday 19 November, and will see their Milawa winery transformed into a buzzing hub of live entertainment (including seven bands over the course of the weekend), street food and (of course) wine. Some of the highlights include masterclasses from chef Adam Liaw, hawker-style street food and miniature farmer’s market showcasing the best of the King Valley.

Check out all the details here.

Honestly, both are equally mouth-watering in our eyes, but Ombra Salumi Bar and frenemy, Huxtaburger, disagree. They're gonna butt heads for one messy afternoon. Swapping corners, Huxtaburger’s Daniel Wilson will try his best at pizza-making while Ombra’s Carlo Grossi will try his best at burgers. Then for our eating pleasure, they’ll return to what they do best and whip up some of Melbourne’s best pizza and burgers...with just a lil debating and voting on the side. And yes just to clarify, that means one whole pizza and burger and beer to stuff yourself with.

When: 12:30, Sunday 29 October

We thought we’d let you know there’s going to be a wellness retreat spreading zen at The Olsen Hotel come November 4. Fancy a paint and a sip of vino? Cork and Chroma is the perfect destination to re-visit high-school art classes…but with alcohol this time. The very talented (and patient) team at Melbourne’s Cork and Chroma will school you on all you need to know to produce a Van Gogh or an accidental Jackson Pollock. Even the most clumsy and non-arty people will walk out the door with a not-so-bad-looking painting that’ll go straight to the pool room.

Classes run regularly. For more info, click here.
