So simple and yet so scrumptious, dumplings are surely one of man’s greatest inventions. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as dipping a tiny parcel of deliciousness into your sauce of choice and stuffing it in your face, amirite? We’ve rounded up the best dumplings in Melbourne from some of our favourite Chinese restaurants for all you dumpling-aholics out there. So grab your chopsticks, fill your dipping saucer (I’m sure it has a more technical name than that…) and get ready to book a table at one of these epic Melbourne dumpling hot-spots!

ShanDong Mama

Melbourne CBD

Don’t be fooled by the parred-back look of this Chinese diner. While the décor might be minimal, the flavours in the dumplings at Bourke Street restaurant ShangDong Mama are epic. Everything here is worth trying once, and it’s so affordable that you won’t have to break the bank to sample the entire selection. Go hungry—you’ll definitely leave full.

New Shanghai

Melbourne CBD

A newcomer to Melbourne’s dumpling scene, New Shanghai celebrates its first birthday this week, making it a whole year since the restaurant’s expert chefs began dishing out their delicious hand-crafted dumplings to our city’s hungriest diners. With a huge THIRTY folds to each hand-wrapped dumpling, the New Shanghai team make some of the best dumplings in Melbourne for mid-week lunches and evening meals. Make sure you go for the steamed pork wontons with lashings of peanut sauce and chilli oil. Pure, unadulterated dumpling heaven.

David’s Chinese restaurant in Prahran draws inspiration from Shanghai’s kitchens, leading to a menu that not only offers delicious dumplings, but also includes mouth-watering sticky pork belly, tasty Peking duck wraps and melt-in-your-mouth steamed bao. This is our number one Melbourne dumpling spot for you indecisive diners—the mixed dumpling basket (that’s a selection of pork, beef, chicken and veggie parcels) was made for you!

Melbourne CBD

You can’t have been in Melbourne for five minutes and not heard of HuTong Dumpling Bar, the Chinatown laneway go-to for some of the best xiao long bao and wonton dumplings in Melbourne. Decked out in lanterns and typical Chinese fare, this is one for the traditionalists. Our top tip? If you’re ordering the chilli wanton, go for two serves…One is never enough!

Shanghai Garden Dumpling

Box Hill

If you’re a real dumpling fan, you’ll already know that some of the best dumplings in Melbourne can be found outside of the CBD’s Chinatown district and in the eastern suburb, Box Hill. Shanghai Garden Dumpling is our pick of the bunch and, if you get inspired by what you see on your plate, there are plenty of awesome oriental grocers in the area, where you can pick up the ingredients to DIY your own!

Flower Drum

Melbourne CBD

Celebrating its 40th birthday, Flower Drum serves up some of the tastiest deluxe dumplings in Melbourne. Mud crab siu lung bao? Duck wonton with tangerine peel in roast duck reduction?! The best Chinese restaurant in Melbourne for maxing out on some top-notch dumplings that really ramp up the flavour combos.

China Red

Melbourne CBD

Traditional dim sum dumplings don’t come much better than at CBD institution China Red. The steamed peking dumplings are always a hit, but it’s the sesame prawn dumplings that keep us coming back. China Red also does an amazing banquet which comes with enough dumpling-heavy entrees to feed even the hungriest Chinese food fans.

Already tried all of the best dumplings in Melbourne that made the list? Yeah right! Head on over to round one of Melbourne’s best dumplings for some more parcels of delight.
