Julien Moussi Opens Euro-Inspired All-Day Eatery Kiki’s Tavern, Named After His Mother

Julien Moussi is no stranger to Melbourne's hospitality scene. Having opened his first venue with co-owner Kristy-Lea Moussi in 2011, their company, Venues By Only, has now opened 42 venues across the city—but their latest venture feels a little different. 

Kiki’s Tavern officially landed in the former Matilda site on Domain Road, South Yarra, on 15 September. It might be following the raging success of the Godby Hotel, but this venue comes from a much more personal place, taking its name from his father's nickname for his mother. 

Growing up, Moussi’s father called his mother Kiki, and it’s an affectionate childhood memory that has stayed with him. 

“Kiki’s is particularly personal because it brings a piece of both my parents into something I’m creating now,” Moussi says. “The name comes from Dad’s nickname for Mum, but the idea of creating a place where people feel at home is very much inspired by him and the legacy he left with me.” 

So when you eventually step through the doors at Kiki’s, expect that sense of inherited warmth and hospitality to welcome you in. 

The idea took shape on Moussi's recent travels through Europe. He became fascinated by the effortless European drift between coffee, food, drinks, and conversation throughout the day, and often all at the same venue. 

Kiki’s is designed to replicate that same rhythm on Domain Road. Think protein-forward breakfasts and coffee to start the day, long lunches and afternoon drinks to follow, then modern European dining, wine, and cocktails that'll carry you through until late in the evening.

“It's not defined by one meal or one occasion,” Moussi says. “It’s a neighbourhood tavern people can make their own.” 

The menu is seafood-forward, with snacks spanning charred scallops and crispy shrimp moving to local pipi and southern rock lobster pastas, and larger plates like whole market fish of the day and chargrilled snapper. There's also a dedicated 'Raw & Rolled' selection, with Sicilian-style crudo, sashimi, and spicy maki rolls. 

It's not all seafood though, the kitchen is serving a mix of Euro-inspired favourites, including Cacio E Pepe, burrata, steaks and veal cotoletta.  

Rather than gutting the site at 159 Domain Road, Moussi has again teamed up with longtime collaborators By Underwood Design and Construction to work with the original fitout. 

New lighting and contemporary design details will refresh the space, but not erase the existing character, which feels in true harmony with the breezy, ‘stay-around’ flow of the tavern’s spirit. 

Kiki’s Tavern is now open at 159 Domain Road, South Yarra, 7am to midnight, seven days a week.
