A work-office hybrid has become increasingly popular in recent years and for good reason, it’s convenient, flexible and even allows for extra snooze time in the morning. The Commons, a lead creative co-working space, combines the comfort of home with all the tech and social energy your home office might lack.
Founded by Melbourne schoolmates, Cliff and Tom, The Commons embodies their vision of redefining the office experience and fostering happiness in the workplace. By bringing together diverse companies at different stages under the same roof, the co-working space creates an environment conducive to growth and collaboration
Housed in a large, exposed brick building on Wellington Street, the office is located in the heart of the creative suburb of Collingwood. Just a short two-minute walk from the main drag of Smith Street, The Commons is enveloped by some of Melbourne’s best cafes and burgeoning restaurants and bars, meaning that options for lunch are plentiful.
The co-working space is more than an intersection of one’s office and home with amenities like movie theatres with weekly screenings, regular yoga and meditation sessions as part of the wellness program, dog-friendly spaces and a range of cereal in the kitchen for those rushed mornings. There’s even a ping pong table, a rooftop where you can enjoy on-tap beer from the kitchen and a karaoke room—needless to say, the founders have given new meaning to corporate offices.
Designed by Flack Studios, every corner of the building—formerly Aesop’s headquarters—is aesthetically pleasing and meticulously designed. With state of the art facilities, natural lighting and unique amenities, the space creates a warm environment that makes members feel at home.
Beyond the fun facilities, standout work-related features several spaces primed for lectures and workshops, a large open kitchen and dining areas for hosting events. Members, from freelancers to enterprises, have access to a plethora of facilities including over 130 meeting rooms, 9 event spaces, 8 podcast studios and 4 photography studios.
The Commons also recently opened Commons Coffee— a cafe located in front of the Wellington Street entrance—featuring aromatic coffee options with locally sourced pastries and sandwiches to pair. It’s cosy yet visually appealing decor with books, green retro lamps and warm furnishings makes it an inviting place to work.
There are five membership options: co-working, private-office, enterprise, on-demand and virtual office, each offering various perks and seating options for businesses, freelancers and sole traders.
Striking the perfect balance between hybrid-work integration, the co-working membership offers open and dedicated desk options, promoting both individual productivity and community collaboration.
The private office membership caters to small and growing businesses, providing customisable office spaces for teams of 2 to fifty. These offices come fully equipped with desks and chairs, offering the flexibility of working in a secluded space while having access to the social benefits of a co-working space.
The enterprise membership is the most flexible of the options, allowing businesses to customise their office suite while the on-demand and virtual membership options are perfect for those seeking day-to-day passes.
