Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel’s longstanding fashion house continues to dominate the globe, the luxury brand still penetrates style and culture with their timeless designs and chic aesthetic.
Coco was an icon of the fashion world and a true pioneer of the industry throughout the 20th Century.
The NGV has announced that this December it will be launching Gabrielle Chanel, Fashion Manifesto, an exhibition that focuses on Coco’s incredible legacy and her innovation to style and clothing throughout her lifetime. The exhibition is in collaboration with the Palais Galliera, the iconic fashion museum in Paris where it was first exhibited.
Throughout the event, there’ll be over 100 pieces of clothing on display from Coco’s designs as well as pieces of jewellery, accessories and the perfume collections of Chanel that date back to the 1920s. You can expect to get up close and personal with some of the original designs including Coco’s early work with the colour black, including the tailored Haute Couture house pieces which she used to create the timeless and elegant brand aesthetic of Chanel.
Tony Ellwood, the director of the NGV described how impactful Coco has been on the global fashion culture, “There is no bigger name in twentieth-century fashion design than Gabrielle Chanel.
