THE VERDICT
The Prince is a real old charmer and a true Melbourne icon. However, we’re here to tell you all about Prince Dining Room as it ushers in a new era with Sydney’s rising star Mitch Orr at the helm as Creative Director, already making as one of our city's best restaurants.
He’s the guy behind Ace Hotel’s Kiln in Sydney, and made a name for himself with signature dishes like anchovy Jatz. He’s got that knack for approachable fine dining in a way that Ben Shewry has established globally renowned Attica. Sure, it wears a price tag that’s not for the everyday, but boy is it worth it when you swipe the card.
What does that look like at the refreshed Prince Dining Room? For starters, he brought his Jatz with him—although made it Melbourne with Savoys—so expect those alongside a crab cocktail in the dining room or on thrown on a plate with salumi and pickles at the bar. It’s important to note, Orr isn’t a one-man-show, he’s got newly recruited Ben Parkinson leading as Head Chef.
If you are perched up around the bar, the onion rings with smoked mayo are an absolute must. That with a smooth cocktail from Beverage Manager Paul Beresford’s clever brain is all your need for a good night.
But don’t stop there. Other dishes you should order include the grilled scallop with kombu butter, the delightful crudo misto with olive brine and capers, and the wagyu can do no wrong.
