  • A vegan pie brimming with spicy winter vegetables.

As Kiwis, a love of pies is practically in our DNA. These hearty pastries have been keeping us fuelled for generations and are the perfect meal for lunch, dinner, or even a cheeky brekkie. But not all pies are created equal, so we've put together a list of Auckland's absolute best to help you sort your pies, from your pie nots.

So in no particular order, here are Auckland's best pies, let the munching begin.

Pie Rolla's

2 Commerce Street, Auckland CBD | Ponsonby Central, 136/146 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby, Auckland

A cross-section of a pie dripping with melted mince and cheese goodness.
Image credit: Pie Rolla's | supplied

Decked out in a shade of deep blue, this pie hole is one of the worthiest we've come across to date. We're talking crispy, chewy, cult-worthy creations that pull crowds and sell out almost as soon as they're out of the oven. In addition to the classics—mince and cheese, house smoked fish pie, and bacon and egg—at Pie Rolla's you'll find the likes of smoky brisket, jalapeño and American cheese; pulled pork with bacon and cheddar; and cheeky limited editions, too. Hot damn.

Insider Intel:

  • Owner Lewis Mazza-Carson comes from hospitality royalty—his parents, Aaron and Fran, are the power duo behind local favourites like Major Tom's, Hello Friends + Allies, Winona Forever, Just Like Martha, Rude Boy, Friday I'm In Love, Agnès and Ada.

Wen And Yen

6/32 Constellation Drive, Rosedale, Auckland

Before we discovered Wen and Yen, we'd have said while it's possible to get pies with no added gluten, good pies require it. But Wen and Yen proved us wrong. Hot, flaky and soft in all the right places, these folks sling some serious pies from steak and cheese to creamy chicken mushroom spinach, mince and cheese or vegetarian iterations. Some flavours can even be made dairy-free too. If you've got a gluten-free mate (or hot date, perhaps?) to impress, consider this spot your secret weapon.

Insider Intel:

  • Women-owned (by Wendy and Li-Yen), Wen and Yen began as an ice cream sandwich stall market pop-up.

You probably never knew you needed an internet-breaking pie-coffee hybrid but, take it from us, you absolutely do. At least once. Yep, combining your coffee and pie in one (thanks to some culinary wizardry by a certain Chamnan Ly who, back in 2017 decided to pour a coffee into a biscuit pie crust then rim with chocolate and rainbow sprinkles), PieFee is essential eating.

Insider Intel:

  • Come Easter time the folks at PieFee have been known to dish out some showstopping hot cross buns. Mark the calendar.

The Mustard Kitchen

5 Morningside Drive, Morningside, Auckland

The Mustard Kitchen has little in common with the lunch bar that was once in its place—except for pies, that is. To say their version is a step-up from that of their predecessors, however, would be a gross understatement. These homemade goodies are some of the best in Auckland, and have been drawing locals—and out-of-towners—to the cafe's Morningside site for several years now. And with timeless flavours like steak and mushroom sitting alongside more modern options (a little bird told us they once did a French toast pie with bacon, banana, egg and maple)—all packaged inside a buttery, shorter-than-usual crust—we can totally see why.

Insider Intel:

  • Aside from their pies (sacrilege, we know, but here us out) these folks also do a sensational bird seed bar which makes for a great low-waste tramping snack.

Rollers Bakery is a gift direct from the Pie Gods. Forever ushering inventive pies into this world like the Cheeseburger Pie of Christmas '23, the Spag Bol Pies of July '24, and pastried vegan delights that pack just as much of a punch as their meaty counterparts. We're actually convinced there's nothing these folks can't put in a pie and while we couldn't guess at what they're going to whip up next, one thing's for certain: the future holds a helluva lot of bangin' pies and we couldn't be happier.

Insider Intel:

  • These folks celebrated their fourth birthday with a bakery rave. Actual legends.

Baker’s Diary

448 Rosebank Road, Avondale

A suburban gem, Baker’s Diary slings pies just as good (if not better) than the rest of ‘em. And, while there’s a time and a place for a classic beef, chicken or seafood, it’s their less expected fillings that have got us swooning. Just when we thought chicken katsu couldn’t get any better, these folks wrapped it in pastry and slapped a flaky puff lid on top. ‘Love at first bite’ has never been more relatable.

Insider Intel:

  • This spot whips up Japanese-style baked creations on Saturdays and, while there isn’t a pie per se, you might be lucky enough to get your mitts on a baked curry pan (pictured)—which is like a pie in slightly spiced bread form and stuffed full of beef mince curry.

Insider Intel:

  • The only thing better than a warm pie on single-digits day? Nipping next door to Mons Royale and picking out a brand new merino 'fit. It's giving cosy, inside and out.

Muzza's Pies

55 Richardson Road, Mt Albert, Owairaka, Auckland

And what kind of article would this be if we didn't mention the institution that is Muzza's? Their pies are the stuff of local legend (and the cure for many a hangover). Peep their talented bakers whipping up the goods behind the counter. All the classic flavours are here, as well as a rather moreish selection of sweet ones (simply too good not to mention).

Insider Intel:

  • In 2025 these folks created a bit of a stir (globally, actually) when they launched a pie for dogs. The twist? They marketed it as cat-flavoured, although it was really just a blend of rabbit and fish.

We're obsessed with their unlikely flavour combos, which in the past have included the best-selling corned beef and silverbeet, and beef and stout (made with Epic Beer's Extra Stout Ale, naturally).

The Cazador Delicatessen

854 Dominion Road, Mt Eden, Auckland

As one of Auckland's top restaurants, it's only fitting that Cazador would also be responsible for some of its best pies. Look for them in their dedicated delicatessen—located right next door to the main eatery—and prepare to have your mind well and truly blown. Case in point: their suped-up version of mince and cheese, which pairs juicy wagyu beef with creamy béchamel sauce. However if you wish to partake of this deliciousness, be warned—these bad boys regularly sell out before 1:30 pm.

Insider Intel:

  • Cazador is the very definition of culinary institution—it's been dishing up the goods since 1987. The Delicatessan came on the scene in 2020 (yep, straight out of lockdown). Pretty impressive.

Give us Lord our daily bread... erm, we mean pie. Especially if it comes from the kitchen of this much-loved bakery, which has not one but six branches across Auckland. Run by the duo behind kingi and the award-winning Orphan's Kitchen—along with a 22nd-generation German baker (say what?)—it should come as no surprise that the pies at Daily Bread are some of the best in the biz. And with flavours like bolognese and provolone, curried kumara, and mint and mutton, you'll be wanting to make a pilgrimage to one of their stores, stat.

Insider Intel:

Any day spent at this dreamy seaside village should include at least one Baked @ Devonport pie, with hearty offerings like butter chicken, cheese frank, and one of the best chicken and mushroom pies around. They also do a pie of the month so it's worth putting this spot on regular rotation.

For pies that pack a real bang for their buck, you can't beat Ripe Deli. These guys have some of the tastiest pastries in Auckland and the best bit is, you can get them on both sides of the bridge. So what's their secret, you ask? Classic flavours, done with finesse. The beef brisket and smoked fish are always a good time, but where we reckon the party is really at is with the mince and cheese (because if you couldn't already tell, we're big fans). This baby mixes things up with with not one but two types of cheese (Swiss and Gruyère), sitting atop a bed of succulent free-range mince. Get it in ya.

Insider Intel:

  • The Richmond Road location was Ripe Deli's first ever store and it has been since dubbed the Mothership.

Tart Bakery

555 Great North Road, Grey Lynn & 88 Broadway, Newmarket

This one's for all the vegans out there—and the non-vegans, as it turns out. The very notion of a vegan pie is a head-turner (we take our hat off to anyone who can make pastry without real butter), but don't expect Tart to rest on this laurel alone. Their fillings are just as impressive, with flavours like mince and cheese, spinach and tofu, creamy mushroom and chicken, lentil and vege korma, and curry puff regularly doing the rounds.

Insider Intel:

  • "I've spent more than a few mornings parked up outside Tart counting the minutes 'til the door opened and I could dart in to grab a mince and cheese. I don't miss meat but I really miss being able to sink my teeth into pastry, and Tart's one just hits, every single time." -Alice
