Black Friday looms—Friday 29 November, to be exact—and while it’s a froth-worthy occasion for some, it prompts a wave of eye-rolling for others (not least because it doesn’t, in fact, land on Friday 13th).
One of the biggest arguments against Black Friday is it encourages wild mass consumerism with bargains blinding consumers to the environmental effects of more stuff (according to Mindful Fashion NZ, here in Aotearoa we send 143 tonnes of clothing waste to landfill every single day). Yikes.
Of course, it’d be better for the planet to not buy anything (ever) but in reality, that’s not exactly practical. The Conscious Countdown, however, is, allowing you to snag a bargain from a curation of local businesses that put the planet and people first. It’s making sustainability easy. And that’s exactly what we need.
A two-week initiative by REMI, Aotearoa’s newest second-season platform for individuals, resellers, circular business, community/charity initiatives and stock seconds, The Conscious Countdown is a vote towards more thoughtful consumerism. Every day throughout the two weeks, The Conscious Countdown will spotlight eco-savvy local brands allowing sustainability-minded shoppers to purchase select items from each business through REMI.
The earth-conscious lineup includes children’s clothing by Nellie Janes made with recycled textiles, made-to-order designs by Ellis, slow vintage and recycled fashion by Riel, sterling silver jewellery and plant-dyed fabrics by Luna & Rose, footwear by Collective Canvas, and crochet bags made from repurposed materials by Martini Made. Plus, vintage, preloved and NZ-made clothing curated by Remnants, childrenswear by Sunny Folk Clothing, and rad recycled caps by Offcut.
