In need of some downtime or already dreaming about your Easter break? What better reason to dig out the ol’ tent and spend some quality time with Mother Nature. To help you on your merry way, we’ve rounded up the best camping spots near Auckland. Pack your bags and stock up on marshmallows because we’re going camping!
You don’t need to drive far to escape the hustle and bustle of the CBD. In fact, you can get your summer holiday fix just down the road in Takapuna. Think white sandy beach, panoramic views and glistening blue water. The best part? You’re literally a hop, step and a jump from some of Auckland’s best restaurants and cafes. Ease yourself into the wonderful world of camping at Takapuna Beach Holiday Park. You won’t lose mobile reception and you’re in arm’s reach of good coffee and even better cocktails.
A ten-minute drive north of Matakana, you’ll stumble upon Whangateau. The small coastal settlement has the best of both worlds: it’s not only peaceful and tranquil, but there is also plenty to do if you’re up for an adventure. We suggest you start the day with a trip to Matakana Farmers’ Market, then laze on Omaha Beach before finishing things off with a wood-fired pizza from Leigh Sawmill Café. Sleep off your food coma at waterfront campsite at Whangateau Holiday Park.
If you fancy getting up close and personal with the creatures of the sea, plan a getaway to Goat Island. The marine reserve is home to some of the world’s friendliest (and biggest) fish—you might even spy a stingray! Set up camp at Goat Island Camping and Accommodation and make a weekend of it. Nestled on 130 acres, the picturesque camp ground boasts barbecues, a kids’ playground (complete with skateboard ramp) and snorkel hire. Spend the evening relaxing around the open campfire while you eat your body weight in marshmallows.
Located on the western shores of the Firth of Thames, Tapapkanga Regional Park is one of the country’s most beautiful camping spots. In fact, the park is so pretty that it’s home to Splore music festival. Picture lush native forest, a pohutukawa-lined beach and bubbling stream—no fake backdrops here. There are four council-operated campgrounds, featuring all the necessary facilities (you know, barbecues and long drops).
Rounding off our list of the best camping spots near Auckland is the idyllic Piha. And, lucky for us, the popular west coast beach has its own campground—hoorah! Piha Domain Camp has all the trimmings: lagoon access, kids’ playground, tennis courts and bowling greens. It’s a two-minute walk to Piha beach, meaning you can squeeze in an early-morning surf before the crowds show up.
