Granola, schmola, acai bowls? So 2015. As for you, green smoothie—pureed spinach is no way to start the day. A breakfast sandwich, especially in the weekend, is exactly what you need in the early a.m. Not only do they taste like a gift from the breakfast gods, they’re easy to eat with one hand, so you can hold a triple shot flat white in the other. Actual breakfast bliss.

Sound like something you’d like to get into? Good. You won’t regret it. To help you get this addiction underway, we’ve located the best breakfast sandwiches in Auckland. Let us begin…

Second to their undeniably cool vibe and décor are Ceremony’s genius breakfasts sandwiches—they’re what they do and and they do them well. Using a soft brioche bun as the vessel, Ceremony pack their sammies with the likes smoked bacon, egg, cheddar, onion jam and chipotle ketchup. Our fave, however, is the #2—a tasty union of pork and fennel sausage, over easy egg, cheddar, slaw and sriracha mayo. The coffee is off the charts too. Come to mama.

Greedy Guts

Auckland CBD

We hope you’re hungry because Greedy Gut’s breakfast baps are hella hefty. Sink your teeth into the wild boar, bacon, fried egg, spinach parmesan, tomato and mayo version or keep things vego via smashed peas, ricotta, fried egg and mushies. They’re made fresh daily and will keep you happy and full ‘til lunch rolls around.

The Mustard Kitchen

Home to all manner treats (donuts, scrolls, pies…you name it), The Mustard Kitchen never fails to deliver on the delicious homemade food front, especially when it comes to breakfast sangas. How does an eggs bene bap sound? Ideal? Perfect? Marriage material? We thought so. It doesn’t get much better than crispy bacon, a poachie, spinach and lashings of hollandaise. Get in early though, these babies sell like hotcakes.

Vikki Lane Bar & Kitchen

Auckland CBD

Located down, you guessed it, Vikki Lane is Vikki Lane Bar & Kitchen and more importantly, a might fine bacon and egg buttie. They don’t skimp on the good stuff (bacon) and serve it up with a classic dose of HP sauce—a nod to their London café culture #inspo.

Bird On A Wire

Ponsonby & Takapuna

Before you scoff at the idea of chicken for breakfast, hear us out. Bacon can bugger off for a bit because it’s a chicken sausage patty that takes the spotlight in Bird On A Wire’s chick ‘egg n’ cheese sammie. It’s put into a warmed bun alongside mustard cheese sauce, a double fried egg, rock and housemade ketchup. Cluck, cluck.

Major Sprout

Auckland CBD

Announcement: you need the Crunchy Gentleman in your life. This lip-smacking fellow can be found at Major Sprout, where they often run out of him—he’s that damn delicious. Think a free range ham and provolone toastie with three cheese béchamel and a side of date and chilli chutney. It’s a totally naughty start to the day but oh-so worth it.

Auckland CBD

Feeling rough? Drag your sorry butt to Depot for one of their bacon and egg doonas. It’s a loaf bun loaded with thick slices of double pressed bacon and fried egg, and will kick your hangover to the curb like you wouldn’t believe.

Cereal Killa

Mt Eden

Sometimes bacon just ain’t enough. Cereal Killa’s killashakes have made this Mt Eden café Auckland famous but when it come to breakfast, their pork belly bun deserves your attention. They take a brioche bun and fill it with a hunk of pork belly, fried egg and baby spinach. Do the sensible thing and chase it with a shake.
