If you’re looking for the perfect day trip destination this summer, look no further than the waterfront city of Mandurah. Less than an hour’s drive from Perth, Mandurah is known for its gorgeous beaches and canals, amazing eats, and laidback vibes—the ideal destination for anyone looking for a little getaway.
Summer is the best time to see it all in Mandurah. Between top-notch cafes right on the water and some of the best bars around, you’ll be spoilt for choice on your picturesque day out. For those who are ready to get festive, there’s even a Christmas Lights Trail which is the perfect way to watch the city light up once the sun goes down.
One of our favourite reasons to visit Mandurah is its stellar restaurant and bars. Our favourite spot? The Pen. Located right on the shorefront, The Pen has been a crowd favourite for years, mainly because it has something for everyone. Enjoy some of the tastiest dishes in the area, like the Franklin River pork belly with potato dauphinoise, cauliflower puree, charred radicchio and jus, or its dreamy housemade pappardelle with pumpkin, kale, burnt butter, feta and dukkah. There are also heaps of vego and vegan options to explore as well as the usual pub suspects to keep more traditional pubgoers stoked.
The Pen's drinks menu is extensive, featuring dozens of beers, wines, and cocktails (including the famous Pen Punch) to sip on while soaking in its stunning waterfront views. Whether you’re after a beer with mates or looking to impress your date, The Pen has all your drink needs covered (make sure you book ahead as tables fill up fast). If you’re worried about getting home after a few, you can head upstairs and stay the night at the Sebel Hotel—its coffee bar and outdoor pool are sure to cure your dusty head in the morning.
For those who are looking to get into the festive spirit (or for those who enjoy watching locals get into some friendly competition), make sure you check out the Christmas Lights Trail that runs through more than 200 homes throughout the canals of Mandurah. The best way to view the lights is through the canals via boat or cruise, but there are also private charters available if you wanna go all out. The spectacle gets bigger and better every year, so this year’s event is guaranteed to be one that’s worth getting out to see.
On the hunt for a fun destination to explore with the family or for a place to spend a fun weekend with mates? Make sure you keep Mandurah and The Pen on your radar for epic summer hangs.
