Where To Go Ice Skating In Perth

Written by: Rebecca Keating

Perth might not be the first place you think of when it comes to icy adventures—us Perthlings don't bat an eyelash at 40 degree days and complain when the temps hit lows of 18—but there’s something undeniably magical about embracing the chill and gliding across an ice rink, jumper on, cheeks flushed, and hands clasped in mittened solidarity.

It’s something pretty much all of us have tried and long-since forgotten, but surely it’s about time ice skating made a comeback. It’s infinitely cheaper than most of our other hobbies and for a seriously cute date night (cue the hand-holding and wobbly moments), a wholesome outing with friends, or just an excuse to rug up and sip a post-skate hot choccy, ice skating is the winter activity we should all be leaning into.

Forget dinner and drinks—this is your sign to swap the usual night out for laps around the rink, 90s beats pumping and maybe even a cheeky mulled wine after. Perth might only have two main rinks to choose from, but what they lack in quantity they make up for in character.

Here’s where to get your skate on this winter.

Cockburn Ice Arena

401 Progress Drive, Bibra Lake WA 6163

If you're looking for the ultimate winter activity here in Perth, Cockburn Ice Arena is where to go full snow bunny (minus the actual snow). This massive Bibra Lake complex is more than just a spot to skate a few laps—it's a full-blown icy playground for beginners, pros and everyone in between. From figure skating and synchronised routines to ice hockey and even curling, there's something here for every type of skater. You can even test your skills during a Stick and Puck session or grab a group and book in for skating lessons if you’re looking to level up.

The general skating sessions are great for getting your fix, but it’s the Tuesday and Thursday Cheapskate nights that really bring the energy. Just $17 gets you in (skate hire included), and with DJs spinning and skaters coasting under the lights, it’s got big mid-week mood.

Want to mix things up? Book in for a session with one of the 10 Ice Bykes—essentially modified trikes with blades—that let you slide, drift and maybe even spin your way around the rink.

Once you’ve had your fill of falls, spins and skates, you’ll want to defrost at Cabin 401 Bar & Grill. Overlooking the rink, this cosy hangout dishes up hearty American-Aussie fare like pulled pork tacos, buffalo fried chicken burgers, mac and cheese bites and even pan-seared barramundi. There’s also a huge selection of local and international craft beers if you’re keen to toast your skating success (or survival). And if you time it right, you can catch a live ice hockey match while you eat—Friday to Sunday nights are prime for rinkside action.

Frostbite Café is also on hand for hot drinks and snacks if you’re after something more casual, and there’s a full pro shop if you’re starting to take this whole skating thing a little more seriously. Add in themed nights (yes to 80s skate, the Wild West and Christmas costume sessions) and you’ve got yourself a winter activity that’s anything but boring.

Perth Ice Arena

708 Marshall Rd, Malaga WA 6090

It’s giving retro school excursion energy—in the best way. Perth Ice Arena in Malaga is your go-to for classic, no-fuss ice skating. Whether it’s your first time back on the rink since Year 6 camp or you’re just chasing something a little different for your next night out, this spot has you covered.

The general sessions hit just right: pumping 90s tracks, people-watching gold, and the best idea for your next date night—especially if you're into the whole "support each other while falling over" kind of bonding.

The rink is also home to Perth Thunder, the city’s official ice hockey team, so if you’re lucky you might catch a match. But outside of the pros, it's a spot where everyday skaters can try figure skating, learn the basics of hockey, or just glide around to their heart’s content during general sessions. Entry is $28 including skate hire, and group bookings are available if you're planning a birthday or a big group outing.

Once you've wrapped up on the ice, hit the on-site café for the kind of salt and vinegar loaded hot chips that taste even better after a bit of cardio. If you're up for more, swing by the Malaga Markets on a Friday or Saturday night for a multicultural feast afterwards—or take a little detour to Nabil’s in Bassendean for a slab of that viral (but house made) Dubai chocolate and a cup of strawberries covered in pistachio kataifi (can confirm, everything here is ridiculously delicious.) Because if you're going to embrace winter, you might as well do it properly.
