All The Best Spots To Eat Down South, According To Cabin Fever’s Top Chefs

Pull out your fluffiest beanies, WA's fave winter fest, Cabin Fever, is back in all its cosy glory. Running from Friday 15 to Sunday 24 July, the 10-day festival will see over 40 mouth-watering events pop up down south, from Busselton to Margaret River—providing loads of opportunities to devour all the food, wine and beer your body can handle while getting nice 'n toasty with your fellow foodies.

As expected, the first program release was so popular a bunch of the events have already sold out. But fear not, there's still plenty of epicness to get around. We're talking farm to table feasts, unforgettable wine degustations, fireside BBQs, cocktails, toasties, live music and even the odd drag queen. Better rally your mates, grab tickets and get your Airbnb sorted quick smart. These will sell out.

With a few event tix safely in our pocket, we reached out to some of the celebrated WA chefs taking part in this year's fest and asked them "where are the best spots to eat down south?" so we could come armed with a fresh hit list when we head down this July.

From well-known faves to hidden gems only the locals know, here's where Cabin Fever's chefs like to eat down south. We're adding each one to our must-try list.

  • Frui Momento, Wilyabrup—New kid on the block, but not a new chef on the block, Seth’s new restaurant, Frui Momento, is an absolutely amazing culinary experience with top shelf locally WA sourced ingredients. I was lucky enough to treat my Mum to a recent lunch there after years of separation due to border restrictions, and it was a standout experience (pictured below).
  • Margaret River Brewhouse, Margaret River—For a more casual experience, MR Brewhouse is always consistent, with its great food and service and always a great relaxing atmosphere. 
  • Vasse Felix, Wilyabrup—Say no more… if you love dining experiences, then this is a must-do in the WA food scene, maybe on the Australian food scene. An absolute standout.
  • Fishbone, Wilyabrup—Love this spot as it offers something different in the daytime winery scene in the region, with its Japanese offering. It’s a fave spot to take the family, as the kids can run around on the grass, whilst we lounge back enjoying wine and food.

  • Chow's Table, Yallingup—Love the Asian flavours and how well Mal Chow executes his dishes.
  • Margaret River Brewhouse, Margaret River—Great casual tasty food with lots of flavours and varieties, nice atmosphere and their own beer and cider!
  • Prevelly Store, Margaret River—And for a coffee I love the Prevelly Store. Great staff, awesome coffee and a magic view.

  • Chow's Table, Yallingup—Chow's is our go-to when I've got a day off. Not only is Mal Chow's food some of the best in the region, the vibe is good, the booze is good and the house of cards cellar door is just over the grass. The whole menu is great, but we love the roast duck and Chow's roti is AMAZING!! 
  • Frui Momento, Wilyabrup—My wife and I recently visited Seth James' new restaurant Frui Momento for our anniversary. The setting is stunning and the food is amazing! We loved starting the long lunch with some top quality seafood, served perfectly with some delicious bubbles. You just can't get amazing seafood like that anywhere else in the region. 
  • Shelter, Busselton—We do live closer to Busselton, so we quite often find ourselves at Shelter Brewing. It's a great place, the beers are good and the pizzas are tasty. It's also a plus being on the edge of the park for the grommies to run around while we enjoy our pints.

Miki’s Open Kitchen

  • Fervor, No Fixed Address—Yoda (chef) has a totally unique product and a respectable business. This beautiful Australian pop-up dining concept meets every genuine food lover's dream.
  • Wild Hop Brewing, Yallingup—I love the beers on offer and the environment is great for families, with an attractive menu.
  • West Coffee, Margaret River—I spend most mornings here. The coffee is spot on and the team are lovely people.

  • Beerfarm, Metricup—BBQ on the Friday nights is always incredible and the milk stout is the best beer in the region.
  • Miki’s Open Kitchen, Margaret River—The atmosphere at Miki’s takes you closer to the feeling you get dining in back street restaurants in Japan.
  • La Scarpetta, Margaret River—Great Italian restaurant, it’s our go-to every few weeks if not more!

  • Chow's Table, Yallingup—We would marry Mal Chow if we could. His food is incredibly well balanced and innovative and he is one of the most humble guys we know.
  • Tiny’s Coffee, Dunsborough—Jules is the bomb and her coffee has saved us so many times. This little place is full of love and pumps out the best coffee down south!
  • Wild Hop Brewing, Yallingup—This place is everything in one. Exceptional original beer, amazing shared food out of their wood fire oven and staff that always have a warm welcome and embrace everybody with a smile.
