Everything You Need To Tick Off At This Year’s Freo Festival

By Jessica Ellis

If you can't bear another night flicking endlessly through Netflix, consider your winter social life sorted because the 10 Nights in Port festival is bringing Fremantle to life this season with a slew of unforgettable evening events.

Whether you're into emerging artists or old favourites, this line-up has it all. We're talking immersive dance extravaganzas, gigs at hidden venues and even a foodie bingo. Yes, you read that right.

These are our picks for what not to miss at WA's fave winter festival.

Eaters

Thursday, August 18 and Friday, August 19

Grab a pint and pull up a seat because you're about to embark on an epic game-show-style quiz. But let's be clear; this isn't your typical pub quiz. Eaters is really an interactive performance all about, you guessed it, food. The theme at hand is all things tasty, plus the important political and cultural discussions that come along with this. The line-up of hosts includes local favourite Scott Ludlam, Boorloo's Gina Williams, eco-feminist Vandana Shiva, singer Odette Mercy and political journalist Gabrielle Chan.

Blackout

Saturday, August 20

Swap your regular weekend routine for a one-of-a-kind night at Blackout. This wonderland of electronic music, artistic projections and dance-worthy performances is sure to transport you to another world.

Directors Charley Caruso and Della Rae Morrison have brought their vision to life with top-notch local talent, heroing First Nations artists. The line-up includes creatives like Abrynz, Onyx, Joel Davis, Koortal, Kendra, Boox Kids, The Merindas, and more. Together, they meld sonic pop vocals and atmospheric technology to bring the energy for this event.

LightWaves

Thursday, August 11 -Wednesday, August 17

For a larger-than-life creative moment, add the LightWaves exhibition to your winter to-do list. This one is free to enter, and it's only on during the 10 Nights in Port festival. As the title suggests, LightWaves is an immersive audiovisual exploration of something we know and love—the ocean. The room is encompassed by giant waves and their matching soundscape, which roll in and out around the viewers. You'll experience both the calming nature of the ocean as well as its more turbulent, chaotic side.
