If your dog’s been letting out a few too many dramatic sighs lately, it might be time to take them on a holiday. Somewhere where they are free to roam with the salty sea breeze in their fur. Some where they can forget the existential horrors of the vacuum cleaner. Somewhere like Good Boy Goes North.
I dropped by Jurien Bay for a few nights at Good Boy with good girl Saddie on an unusually warm weekend in winter. A typical border collie, she is not easily impressed by anything outside of the ordinary, but this place passed the sniff test within seconds.
Just a few tail wags from Jurien’s dog-friendly beach, the renovated mid-century stay is packed with canine comforts. Much to Saddie’s delight, she had limitless peanut butter biccies, a self-serve basket of toys, chic dog bowls both inside and out, a fully fenced yard for zoomies and a dedicated outdoor doggy shower for rinsing off post-beach adventures (though admittedly, she wasn’t too keen on the latter).

Of course, the humans are well looked after too. The bones of the 1960s shack are still visible, but they’ve been lovingly zhuzhed to feel fresh and stylish while maintaining that classic coastal nonchalance.
The furniture has a retro-’70s vibe with a low-slung L-shapped sofa, burnt-orange accents and sculptural features. There’s also a SMEG oven for cheffing up at-home feasts, Miele appliances in the laundry, super-soft Sheridan towels and unlimited high-speed Wifi. Both bedrooms are kitted out with king sized beds, Aussie-made mattresses, quality linen and a curated selection of pillows in varying firmness levels.

When it’s time to explore, Jurien Bay has plenty of pooch-friendly options to sniff out. Start with a barista-made coffee from Jetty Kiosk before hitting the Turquoise Way Trail for an easy, scenic stroll. About 20 minutes down the road, the Lobster Shack in Cervantes serves up just-caught seafood in a dog-friendly outdoor area just a few sandy steps from the beach.

It’s not often you find a stay where humans and hounds are treated with equal reverence. At Good Boy Goes North, everyone’s needs are met: lush king beds and polished interiors sit happily alongside treat jars and doggy bath stations, and neither party has to compromise.
Just don’t be surprised if the sighs start again when it’s time to leave.
