Transperth Transformed In 2025: Metronet Byford Rail Extension With New Park Open
We’ve got some amazing news for the public transport community, because the Transperth Metronet railway expansion project is officially completed! The yellow Armadale line has had some major improvements and been extended 8km south to a brand-new ground-level station in Byford, meaning Perth just became a lot more connected.
What Does This Extension Mean?
The WA Labor Government committed to their Metronet project amidst the 2017 election, promising longer train lines that would make life easier for all Western Australians. Since then, they’ve opened the airport line, the Yanchep line, the Ellenbrook line, and the Thornlie-Cockburn link, and as of Monday October 13th, the Armadale to Byford rail extension.
If you’ve been frustrated by the Armadale line closures while the upgrades were made, your patience is now being rewarded with a modernised Armadale station and a gorgeous new elevated rail that stretches all the way to Byford. Because, yes, for the first time, Byford now has their very own train station, complete with 400 car bays, bike parking and updated bus routes. And it’s only a 45-minute commute to the CBD!
But the icing on the cake, apart from how great this is for local businesses and town development, is that the elevated rail opened up a heap of public space, which has been transformed into Perth’s newest and longest linear park.

What Does This Look Like?
Aptly named Long Park, this green space full of native vegetation and community spaces sprawls across 7km and 6 hectares, beginning at Carlisle Station and weaving through to the new Beckenham Station. It’s also home to plenty of quirky playgrounds, skateparks, dog parks, and youth plazas with basketball and netball courts. The pièce de résistance might just be the outdoor art trail featuring over 20 pieces of public art, including First Nations designs that embody the sense of community Long Park is fostering in Perth’s south-east.

The State Government has also set aside spaces within the park for pop-up cafes and community events, so it’s kind of like our very own Central Park. Watch out, New York!
WA Premier Roger Cook has confirmed that Long Park is providing Western Australians with “more opportunities to get outside, be active, and engage with their local community”, and proclaimed the Metronet project as “a huge milestone” that’s made public transport “more affordable and accessible for Western Australians.”
So, there you have it—Transperth has had a serious makeover over the last few years, and now one of the fastest growing areas in WA has easy city access, not to mention a fabulous new park. Might be time to add a Byford pitstop to your agenda?
