Exploring your local neighbourhood, going to your favourite beach, sipping tasty brews and enjoying lunch at your go-to spot is what life's all about. What could make it even better? Doing it all in a kit tailor-made for urban explorers.
The good news is National Geographic has launched a range of clothing that is ideal for exploring. To put the threads to the test, our Managing Editor, Anna Franklyn, shares her favourite ways to explore her hometown of Fremantle.
Leighton Beach
8am
A Perth girl through and through, my perfect day starts with some form of exercise by the beach. A quick jog along the footpath from Leighton to South Cott offers up some pretty epic views, but nothing clears your head quite like your feet in the water, walking along the sand. Top it off with a quick dip and you’ve got yourself the perfect start to your day.
MRKT Space
9am
It’s time for a coffee and the legends at MRKT Space make a truly delicious one that is best enjoyed while soaking up the sunshine from their deck. This is also the place to stock up on Bread in Common bread, pantry staples, gifts and wine—they’ve got something for everyone here.
Good Things Fremantle
10am
There’s nothing better than a hearty breakfast and Good Things does some of the best, on one of the most beautiful streets in Freo. As a sucker for a good smashed avo, I struggle to go past The Hulk, but the Chilli Eggs served on roti ranks pretty high in Perth’s greatest brekkies. Of course, no trip to Good Things is complete without coffee so sign me up for round two.
Fremantle
11am
There is just so much goodness in Fremantle, you could spend an entire week wandering the streets and not get bored.
If you let me, I’d spend an entire day perusing endless books at New Edition. But when I manage to tear myself away from that new book smell, it’s to treat myself to a pair of Baggu socks or a cute tea towel from Kate & Abel, buy every birthday present for the year ahead at Canvas or shop for new threads at Three Stories and Service Denim.
After all that shopping, the bank account is looking a little less than spectacular so it’s time to soak up some local art across Freo galleries like Moore & Moore, Fremantle Arts Centre and Japingka Aboriginal Art Gallery.
Gage Roads
2pm
After all that walking, it’s time for another refuel and where better than Gage Roads? Nothing beats sitting portside overlooking the water with an icy cold ginger beer, crunchy hot chips and a couple of fish tacos.
