Welcome to Good News Stories, a feature series where together with Murdoch University, we’re shining a spotlight on the people and West Aussie businesses sparking positive change.
Committed to using only the best local ingredients, Our Ruby Girl is an equal opportunity employer and a zero-waste cafe on a mission to make a difference—and to serve breakfasts and coffees that slap.
If you’ve ever been to Ley Street, you’ve probably stumbled across the brightly painted brick walls of this friendly neighbourhood cafe with a big heart. Landing on the streets of Como six years ago, Our Ruby Girl has grown from a local gem to a roving catering company complete with coffee vans and gelato carts.
Woven throughout it all, is an unwavering commitment to creating a workplace where everyone—regardless of background or ability—has equal opportunities to thrive.
Together with Murdoch University, we spoke to their founder and owner Sarah Yates, to uncover how Our Ruby Girl is sparking change, one brekky burger at a time.
“We're on a mission to provide unique and equitable opportunities for people of all abilities."
With 50% of their workforce made up of people with a disability, Yates' inclusive approach to employment has offered opportunities in the hospo industry to those who are too often overlooked.
"We believe in removing barriers, embracing diversity, and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique strengths," Yates says.
But for Yates, equal opportunity isn’t just a policy—it’s a core belief that shapes how they hire, support and nurture their team.
“Offering equal employment opportunities is about fairness and justice. Everyone deserves the right to pursue their ambitions and contribute to society, regardless of their background or circumstances,” Yates says.
“This has helped us build a strong, motivated team that reflects our commitment to community and creating positive change.”
“Our walls are adorned with love notes from customers.”
And it’s not just the team that benefits—Our Ruby Girls’ commitment to equality and inclusivity has had a huge ripple effect on the community.
“Overall, fostering an equitable and inclusive work environment not only benefits employees but also contributes to a stronger, more vibrant industry and society,” Yates says. Our Ruby Girl has become a hub where people feel welcome to park up anytime for a solo coffee or brunch with friends.
“We love the messages of kindness and joy that people leave. You can always expect authenticity, great service and a kick-arse coffee,” Yates adds.
And it’s not just the coffee that keeps regulars coming back for more. “The Sloppy Joe is a fan favourite—packed with slow-cooked, flavourful fillings and served on a fresh bun, it’s the ultimate comfort food," Yates says.
“ A big winner is our acai bowl, loaded with vibrant fruits, granola, and a drizzle of honey."
Their rotating brekky menu, busy tables, and love notes offer a pretty clear lesson for other hospo venues: doing good is good for business.
“Businesses that prioritise inclusivity and equal opportunity attract customers who value social responsibility, which offers a chance to enhance their reputation and foster customer loyalty.”
According to Yates, spots like The Little Concept, a funky Freo cafe known for their experimental hot bevs are nailing the brief. Their big focus on ethical sourcing and sustainability provides a platform for local artisans and makers.
"They create an inclusive environment that supports small businesses and fosters community connections," Yates adds.
Over at the CBD state library, Ground+Co is breaking the cycle of homelessness by providing employment opportunities for homeless young women and vulnerable young people.
"Simply by enjoying a coffee or meal here, you're contributing to a meaningful cause," Yates says.
For Yates, a diverse workforce can offer such a huge variety of perspectives and ideas, fostering creativity and innovation. "This is particularly important in hospitality, where understanding diverse customer needs can enhance service and experiences," she adds.
