I’ve been smashing dumplings at My House Dumpling for *years* ever since I lived down the road, and yet, naively never realised the iconic back story of the delighfully warm and welcoming owner Judy Wu; a strong, determined female migrant who went from successful CEO in China to starting again from scratch without a single word of English in a completely unknown land.

For Wu, food was always a form of not only connection to home, but also a means of sharing a piece of her own heart. When COVID hit, and most businesses retreated inward, Judy boldly decided to swing back, taking her Wembley Food Court stand into a full-blown restaurant perched on Leederville’s iconic Oxford Street strip. Many would guess the next part of the story wouldn’t go so well, but in fact, despite the chaos, My House Dumpling begun to absolutely thrive.

Why? Because she perfected the formula. The staff are kind and knowledgable, the vibe is always unpretentiously bustling and (most importantly) each delicious morsel is painstakingly handmade most of the time by queen Judy herself. You'll find her most mornings sourcing the ingredients solo too from local producers with stringent standards, just to ensure her treasured guests receive the VIP treatment every visit.

The whopping menu may be a touch overwhelming for those that suffer decision paralysis, but really there's no bad choice. Our picks? A little of everything. While it’s hard to pick out the all stars (because every single dish is so insanely flavoursome), for us; the prawn and pork wontons in spicy sauce are something I dream about when I’m craving that perfect balanced umami flavour, teamed up with the pan fried vegetable dumplings (all the flakey, crispy goodness around the sides is god-tier, trust us) topped off with a big steaming bowl of prawn and chicken dumplings in that dreamy hot and sour soup.

But save room friends, because magic’s about to happen. The fact I didn’t know of the chocolate Xiao long bar buns until recently makes me shudder. Those petite little individually-wrapped parcels stuffed with gooey, oozy warm chocolate are now my comfort food. Not overly sweet or greasy or any of those other factors that leave you regretting that overpriced dessert you (I) usually order, we need you to promise you’ll try these out next time you’re anywhere near Leederville. Promise.
