Nic & Kolo might be a fairly laid back cafe in Applecross but it has some serious fine dining clout behind it. Head Chef Nick Trezise has worked in the kitchens at COMO The Treasury and Print Hall so you can expect top-notch nosh, for not as much dosh. It's safe to say you won't be disappointed, no matter what you order.
A hit with Applecross locals, Nic & Kolo serves up mouth-watering breakfasts, lunches and dinners from their contemporary Australian menu, and being a fully licenced venue there's a whole lotta goodness available in the bevvies department.
When dawn rolls around and you can't resist your sweet tooth, Nic & Kolo's buttermilk pancakes with slab bacon (it's almost a centimetre thick), caramel creme, honeycomb and viola are a must. Yes, they probably contain your whole days' worth of calories, but who cares when they taste so good.
If you must be healthy (who are you?) the nut and seed cracker with avocado, shaved beetroot and poached eggs has your name all over it, and if you're like Goldilocks and are after something in between you can't go past the slab bacon and eggs.
Come lunch, the star of the show is the confit pork belly with yuzu gel, sesame and peanut tuile and scratchings. The pork is tender and delicious and coupled with the crunch of the tuile and the citrusy yuzu, it's a perfectly balanced dish. On the lighter side of the menu, but still equally delicious is the raw buckwheat salad. Carrot, zucchini, coriander, ginger, agave soy and chilli combine for a fresh and healthy dish, that packs a chilli-hot punch.
When dinner rolls around you can't go wrong with the pan roasted gnocchi. It's perfection! Served with some tasty spinach puree, sheep's curd, pine nuts and Life Cykel enoki and oyster mushrooms, you will be scraping your plate clean.
Nic & Kolo also make a winning coffee to take away or enjoy with your meal, and if you're after a quick afternoon pick-me-up their tasty afternoon bites are served from 2:30pm daily—grab a tap beer or glass of sparkling and you're set! On top of this, everything on the menu can be made to take-away—bacon and egg brioche bun, anyone?
There's nothing like a mid-week special, and Nic & Kolo serve up two scorchers. On Wednesday's you can get your mitts on a $17 rump steak and chips with bearnaise sauce and Thursday's are all about $15 Angus burgers and beer. Plus, they'll cater almost any event, how good is that!
Heading into summer, Nic & Kolo fire up their charcoal barbeque on Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 3pm and 6pm, sizzling up some yummy crayfish, steak, lamb cutlets, corn and fries. Grab some goodies before heading down to the foreshore for a perfect evening watching all the action on the river.
