The Verdict

Midland really is on the up, especially if cafe Syd & Phyllis is anything to go by. Dedicated to the owner's grandparents, it is a place where modern meets heritage and we're digging it.

Located in the public square, it's the perfect spot for Sunday brunch with your pooch—yes, it's dog-friendly—or you can head in for dinner from Thursday to Saturday.

The brunch menu is a thing of beauty. They're dishing up their own take on the classics like the Hola Avo with charred sweet corn and tomato salsa and the leek and tomato omelette served with crispy kale, but if you want something that will really get your heart going, order the Beef Bread & Egg—slow braised beef brisket, 63 degree egg, hollandaise and apple and fennel slaw all served on wood-fired toast.

If you've got room for a drink, order the s'mores loaded milkshake, or the unicorn one if you're really looking to up your Insta game.

Keep an eye on their Facebook page for deals like their burger and beer nights—it doesn't get much better than a burger and beer for $20—and remember to always check the specials!
