Gluten Free Bakeries Sydney

Gluten-free has come a long way in the last decade or so—and we’re happy to report that’s especially the case here in Sydney/Eora. Whether you’re only intolerant or you’re a super sensitive coeliac, the sad days of crumbly bread substitutes, rubbery pizza dough, and croissants without crunch are all on the way out.

In their place? A neat collection of dedicated gluten-free bakeries that truly take the sting out of not being able to sample cult baked goods from the likes of Cinnabon, Lune, and Lode. In some cases, we'd argue these GF pies and pastries outperform their wheat-based counterparts. Keep scrolling to see Urban List's pick of Sydney's best gluten-free bakeries.

Various Locations

Helmed by nutritionist Cherie Lyden, Wholegreen is a Coeliac Australia-certified gluten-free bakery. Lyden's mission is to dispel the mystery around gluten-free baking for both consumers and the hospitality industry as a whole (she's just released a book too). With a flagship in Waverley, each outpost offers a huge variety of sweets and savouries to try: gluten-free bread, fancy pies, sausage rolls, stunning eclairs, palmiers, danishes, and more.

Wholegreen's gluten-free croissant recipe is one of the best in the biz. Achieving the fluffy interior and crisp, flakey exterior croissants are known for is no easy task even when regular flour is involved—but after 57 trials, head patissier Johann Vanier reckons he has cracked the code, and we tend to agree.

Sébastien Sans Gluten

131 Marion Street, Leichhardt

Bringing classic, time-honoured French flair to Sydney's gluten-free bakery scene is Sébastien Sans Gluten. Behind this special boulangerie is Sebastien Syidalza, a Paris native flexing his French training to create wheat-free baguettes.

You'll also find other French icons like mille-feuille, tart Saint-Honoré, Paris-Brest, pain au chocolat, and, of course, many GF spins on the traditional croissant. There are also Aussie staples and modern bakery staples in the mix like sausage rolls, lemon meringue tarts, and "cruffins" with creative flavours.

Nonie's

Various Markets And Stockists

If you've been living the GF life in Sydney, chances are you've encountered Nonie's now pretty famous activated charcoal and quinoa bread at your favourite cafe. Chef-owner Nonie Dwyer's gluten-free bread has become a staple for venues offering GF alternatives on their breakfast and brunch menus.

Yes, bread is the specialty at Nonie's—as well as her striking charcoal loaf, Dwyer also makes focaccia, pita, and paleo bread. She also does GF crackers, cookies, cakes, muesli, and, at Easter time, some of the best gluten-free hot cross buns we've ever tried. Aside from appearing on the menu at stacks of Sydney cafes, you'll also find Nonie's bread at artisan delicatessens and specialty shops like Feather and Bone. You can also shop online here.

Comeco Cafe

524A King Street, Newtown

If you're scoping this list for gluten-free doughnuts—look no further. While there are a few options for GF doughnuts around town, Comeco Cafe is a cut above the rest. These bite-sized morsels are gluten-free and dairy-free, made with a GF sourdough starter (brown rice and rice flour).

They are fluffy and crispy and fried to order with a range of toppings like adzuki red beans, mocha coffee, matcha, passionfruit curd, and more. As well as their sourdough doughnuts, Comeco serves up GF vegan sushi and onigiri plates, rice bread, potato brownies, and more.

Nutie

44 Holt Street, Surry Hills | 496 Marrickville Road, Dulwich Hill

Nutie is another contender for Sydney's best gluten-free doughnuts. Available to order online and then be collected from an outpost in Dulwich Hill and Miss Sina bakery in Surry Hills, Nutie's doughnuts are also vegan and come dressed in pop-bright icing, sprinkles, fresh fruits, and more.

As well as doughnuts, Nutie bakes other whimsical, aesthetic treats like gluten-free lamingtons topped with towers of cream and maraschino cherries. Who says gluten-free can't be good-looking? Order here
