A French-style Christmas market

While it might be hard to believe, Christmas is, in fact, coming. Not only is it coming, but the one day of the year where we all get to sit around and gorge ourselves with pavlova is right around the corner. It seems the lockdown time warp has finally come to an end and the time of the silly season is upon us.

Don’t worry, there’s no need to cue last-minute fighting in the ham section of Woolies quite yet. Why? Because we’ve got you covered with a list of Sydney’s best Christmas Markets to visit this year. Not only will it save you a tonne of hassle in last-minute shopping, but you’ll actually pick up far better alternatives (whether that be food or gifts) that you just can’t find at Woolies. Besides, who said Christmas shopping couldn’t be fun? With many of the markets offering live music and food trucks, there’s no excuse not to get merry this season.

Here are the best Christmas markets to hit in Sydney.

Bastille French Christmas Market

For the first time ever, Sydney will get the Christmas market it truly deserves: an authentic French Christmas market, complete with snowy chalets, melted cheese stations, mulled wine, carols, and crepes. From the team behind Sydney's cheese and wine-fuelled Bastille Day Festival, this brand-new market will take place in the heart of the city, in front of Customs House at Circular Quay.

Held over four days and free to attend, fill up on French-style pizzas from the South of France, traditional crepes, and gooey raclette, before sipping wine from one of five wine bars spotlighting some of France's most beloved wine regions—Bordeaux, Burgundy, Provence, Alsace, and the Rhone Valley. Newtown's Pistou Deli will be hosting a champagne and oyster bar, where you can try a unique "street degustation", there are self-guided wine tasting tours, and a French wine and cheese cellar too to pick up snacks and gifts for Christmas Day. When: Friday 17 December - Monday 20 December
Where: Customs House Forecourt, Circular Quay

Artisans Christmas Market Glebe

If you want to embrace the true Christmas spirit of giving this year, head straight to the Artisan Markets Glebe. Since 2018, the market has become fully incorporated as a non-profit association – meaning all purchases give back to the community. In the past years, the Artisans Market Glebe has donated to local schools, women’s refuges, youth clubs, rehabilitation centres, and Indigenous education colleges. If that isn’t enough of a reason in itself, the markets cater for over sixty artisanal stalls which offer a range of handmade homewares, fashion, jewellery, and more. It’s decided, giving the gift of giving is by far the best way to support both local businesses and the community this year. More info is here

When: Saturday 11 December, 10am-3pm
Where: Dr Foley Park, Glebe

Cambridge Christmas Markets

The Cambridge Markets are known for serving monstrous Christmas extravaganzas, and this year is no exception. This year, three large outdoor markets will be set up in Pittwater, Moore Park, and Cronulla—so wherever in Sydney you’re from, there won’t be one far from your doorstep. Each market will feature the yearly mix of existing boutique stallholders in addition to emerging retailers, artists, and chefs (all offering their own Christmas specialities, of course).

However, the gem in the crown goes to the Ultimate Christmas Market at the Entertainment Quarter. Aside from your expected Christmas food and gifts, the megamarket is a one-stop shop that also sells Christmas trees, ornaments, and wrapping paper. It really is a Christmas wonderland for those wanting to do their shopping all in one. More info is here

Chai Walli Christmas Warehouse Market

C may stand for Christmas, but it also stands for Chai—and this year, Chai Walli is once again bringing back its renowned masala market. For those looking to veer away from the traditional fruit mince pie and purchase something more original, Chai Walli’s Christmas Warehouse Market is guaranteed to offer some seriously chai-spicey stuff. The infused soaps, chocolates, candles, and body scrubs are just the beginning, as you’ll also be able to get your hands on Chai Walli’s newest products (including lemongrass chai and vegan sticky chai). The Chai Walli Chai Kits make a great gift for tea-loving family and friends. The best part? The market is also dog-friendly, so nobody needs to be left behind.

Entry to the market is free, but make sure to RSVP here to help the team take the right COVID-19 precautions. This year also brings even more excitement to the market with the introduction of a Chai Masterclass, where founder of Chai Walli, Uppma, will take you through the steps to perfecting your chai brew.
