If you haven't heard, Brisbane has its first ever permanent outdoor cinema where you can watch movies under the stars, and it’s located at the Brisbane Powerhouse in New Farm. Dendy Cinemas has teamed up with the iconic arts hub to gift us an all-year-round outdoor film experience in the heart of the city.
A win for Brissy cinephiles everywhere, the riverside theatre under the stars is perfect for those nights when Netflix doesn’t appeal, but neither do you want to do repeat the same old cinema experience. Best of all, there’s no need to worry about a season end date, because this cinema is here to stay, and operates all year round from Thursday to Sunday.
The movie magic takes place thanks to an outdoor projector set atop 40-foot shipping containers. Leave the camp chairs at home and recline back on one of the 350 lounge chairs on offer as you enjoy one of the curated films on the calendar. The part we love most though, is the wireless headphones provided to all patrons for a superior surround-sound experience—because who hasn’t been to an outdoor movie and missed important plot points due to the noise of dogs, kids and planes overhead?

Whether you’re solo-viewing, bringing your besties, or on a family outing, there’ll be a movie on the schedule for you, with a wide variety of options on the calendar, from massive new blockbusters to seasonal classics and arthouse flicks. And for those with four-legged friends, you'll be happy to know that as of December 2024, every Sunday night showing is dog-friendly, complete with puppy snacks on the menu from Fur Kids Bakery.
It all sounds like a pretty good way to take advantage of the long, balmy nights coming this summer to us, especially since you can order a glass of wine or beer, and even a cheese box, from the comfort of your seat via QR code. And hey, with that onsite delivery it’s hard to say no to one of Dendy’s famous hand-scooped choc tops. To view session times and book your seats, head here.
