The Details

With a line-up like Fatcow, Opa, Longwang, Stilts and Rich + Rare, you’d expect Tassis Group’s next move to be one for the books. So, it’s only fitting their latest announcement is a sophisticated modern Asian restaurant taking over an iconic Fortitude Valley location later this year.

Aunty will transform the highly sought after space on Wandoo Street that previously held City Winery into a high-quality dining experience focusing on the rich culinary traditions of Asian cuisine. Reflecting the prestige of the James Street precinct while expanding its multicultural dining offerings, Aunty will combine classic techniques and contemporary flair to serve up staple dishes and innovative interpretations.

"Fortitude Valley has this incredible energy and diversity that perfectly matches what we want to achieve with Aunty," said Tassis Group founder Michael Tassis. "We've been searching for the perfect location to showcase our modern take on Cantonese-inspired Asian cuisine for almost two years, so when the Wandoo Street space in Fortitude Valley became available, it was a no-brainer. It’s the perfect location to create something truly special – a restaurant that honours traditional Asian cooking while pushing modern culinary boundaries."

Bridging the gap between traditional Italian techniques and authentic Asian flavours will be acclaimed chef Salvatore de Ponte at the helm of Aunty’s kitchen. Channeling over 15 years of experience in high-end kitchens across Australia, Asia, London and Italy, Chef de Ponte’s creativity will shine across traditional dim sum and banquet-style dinners championing premium ingredients like Peking duck, fresh seafood, and seasonal vegetables.

"Salvatore's approach to Cantonese-inspired cooking is both respectful and revolutionary," said Tassis. "He understands that great food is about more than just ingredients. It's about technique, timing, and an almost spiritual connection to the cooking process. His background gives him the technical skills to execute these dishes at the highest level, while his passion for Cantonese culture ensures authenticity and sophistication in every dish.

With a name like ‘Aunty’, naturally the venue is packing in the homely vibes with a focus on moody, intimate spaces and modular zones that pay homage to traditional Cantonese tea houses. Overseen by longtime collaborators Clui and creative agency Allo Creative, Aunty’s design, identity and atmosphere will embody a commitment to sophistication and authenticity.

Aunty is set to open in the back half of 2025.
