Where To Find The Gold Coast’s Best Pies, 2024 Edition

By

When it comes to comfort food, nothing beats the humble pie. Whether you're craving a classic, flaky meat pie, a potato-topped shepherd's pie or a creamy chicken pie, the Gold Coast/Kombumerri Country has a slice of pie heaven waiting for you.

From trendy cafes to hidden bakeries, Urban List has scoured the Gold Coast to bring you the ultimate guide to the best pies that will have you coming back for seconds (and maybe thirds). Read on for 15 of the best Gold Coast pie spots in 2024.

Kirra Beach Bakery

11/48 Musgrave St, Coolangatta QLD 4225

We love a good family owned and run business, and the Kirra Beach Bakery definitely falls into that category.

Small but mighty, all of its baked goods are cooked freshly each day with love and care, including their range of high-topped pies which include stalwarts like chicken and mushroom, chunky steak and pepper, old fashioned steak and kidney and modern takes like their latest offering; a Thai curry with huge chunks of juicy chicken. Grab a topping of mash or mushy peas to make it a true classic.

The Outpost Cafe

44 Christie St, Canungra QLD 4275

The Outpost Cafe makes the audacious claim of the home of the best pies in Australia, and while its a hotly contested title, we wouldn’t disagree. Originally built in 1946 to serve meals to the Canungra Army Barracks, The Outpost Cafe has garnered a cult-like following since then, with many Gold Coast locals and those further afield travelling far for a bite of these famous pies.

The pies are just as a good pie should be—handmade, hearty and hefty enough that you’d be hard pressed to finish two pies. Crowd favourites include the chunky steak, lamb and rosemary, steak and mushroom and the steak, bacon and cheese. Tick all the boxes and grab a sausage roll for the road.

Kai Kitchen

7 Waterway Dr, Coomera QLD 4209

New Zealand may claim to have the best pies around, and while we won’t agree we’re sure glad they’ve brought a taste of their famous NZ pies to the Gold Coast. The Kai Kitchen is all about Kiwi-style pies, home baked slices (yes, lolly cake) and old-fashioned New Zealand confectionery, so any homesick Kiwis are sure to find comfort here.

The house made steak and cheese and the steak, bacon and cheese are our favourites but you really can’t go wrong here. Kai Kitchen is, hands down, one of the best spots for a pie feed on the Gold Coast.

Foster's Bakery

2227 Gold Coast Hwy, Mermaid Beach QLD 4218

This ever-bustling Mermaid Beach bakery is the definition of ‘word of mouth doing all the hard work’. With no need for any kind of online presence, the team at Foster’s Bakery slings out an impressive range of flavoursome pies with impossibly golden, crunchy pastry and generous fillings, including a fall-apart-tender slow cooked steak.

Tarte Bakery

1748 Gold Coast Hwy, Burleigh Heads QLD 4220

Tarte Bakery has created a name for itself crafting some of the Gold Coast's best pastries, and the same could be said for their pies. One pie in particular. One very impressive pie. Meet: The Bolognese Pie.

Béchamel, mozzarella, plenty of fresh parmesan and a rich Bolognese sauce are all encased in flaky puff pastry. It doesn't get much better than this. Be warned: these bad boys usually stay for a limited time only so you'll want to get in quick. You can also purchase these pies to bake at home from the new Tarte Market in Currumbin.

With stores in Burleigh, Currumbin and Cabarita, the southerners amongst us are well served by the delicious, freshly baked and slow-cooked wonders that are the Fuel Bakehouse pulled beef pies.

Order one straight up, or delve into the flavour combos that have made Fuel famous amongst the pie-lovers of the coast, including pulled beef with chorizo and cheese, and pulled beef with mushroom and Guinness. You really can’t go wrong at Fuel, which is easily one of the Gold Coast’s best pie shops.

Little Kiwi Bakehouse

8 Lavelle St, Nerang QLD 4211

In just two short years, this Kiwi-inspired Nerang bakery has developed a large and loyal cult following, with people driving from far and wide to wrap their mouths around the moreish goodness that is their homemade pies.

Cooked fresh all day long with nothing frozen, Little Kiwi Bakehouse pies are huge, and filled with top-notch ingredients. The smoked fish pie is insanely popular, so you may have to wait a couple of minutes for a fresh batch to be put out. The pulled pork and apple sauce pie is that perfectly lip-smacking mix of sweet and savoury that’ll have you heading back in for seconds (and thirds).

The Original Tugun Bakery

467A Golden Four Dr, Tugun QLD 4224

We love an under-the-radar gem, and if you’re not from Tugun you may not have heard of The Original Tugun Bakery; however, if you are a Southern Gold Coast local you have undoubtedly heard—and feasted—at this staple over the years. And by years, we mean 44 years.

The Original Tugun Bakery was established in 1975 and has been serving some of the Gold Coast pies ever since then. Our go-to is the cottage pie but we’ve heard that the steak and kidney pie is also a favourite. Make sure to head in early as the pies do sell out daily.

Horners of Sorrento Bakery Patisserie

20 Bundall Rd, Bundall QLD 4217

The award-winning pies at Horners in Sorrento are made from locally-sourced ingredients where possible, and have been satiating hungry Gold Coasters since 1976, so you know they’re onto a winning combination.

Made fresh in house daily, and baked to crisp perfection, the pies come in all the usual flavours and are all so darn good, your biggest problem will be choosing which one to get.

Burleigh Baker

13/50 James St, Burleigh Heads QLD 4220

Burleigh Baker pies are made using their special gut-friendly fermented pastry, high quality ingredients and simple, old-school processes.

The delicious classic beef mince pie is all killer, no filler, and has a wonderfully umami stock base. Natural, wholesome flavour and top shelf pastry skills are the name of the game at this unique bakehouse.

Pie Pie

1887 Gold Coast Hwy, Burleigh Heads QLD 4220

So good it’s worth saying twice, the Pie Pie pies are more than a little extra, and it’s what goes on top that’s almost as exciting as what goes inside.

Their flagship Baker’s original features chunky porterhouse, 24-hour slow cooked brisket and roasted root vegetables in gravy, topped with more roasted vegetables, while the shorty mac promises brisket, bourbon sauce, mac and cheese and pickles on top. But it’s the amazing Baconegganantor pie with roast vegetable ragu, pulled beef, streaky bacon and egg that has our hearts—particularly once it’s loaded with hash browns and melty cheese on top.

Paddock Bakery

20 Hibiscus Haven, Burleigh Heads QLD 4220

While Burleigh’s Paddock Bakery might be more famous for its endless range of creative, loaded sweet pastries and iconic dippy eggs, the pies should never be overlooked.

We already know the pastry skills of the Paddock crew are world-class, so it’s no surprise that their steak, bacon and cheese pie and Massaman chicken curry pie are up there with some of the Gold Coast’s best. Flaky handmade pastry, tender meat, and rich flavours on point. More winners from the talented Paddock team.

Gold Coast Gluten Free Bakery

16 Hilldon Ct, Nerang QLD 4211

Those among us with dietary restrictions are often unable to visit your average bakery, but fortunately for our coeliac and gluten intolerant friends, the Gold Coast Gluten Free Bakery in Nerang has arrived.

As well as an assortment of buns, rolls and cakes, the team here stock the totally gluten-free Beefy’s range of pies, including their melt-in-the-mouth steak, bacon and cheese. All the taste, minus the stomach ache.

Egg Wash Bake Shop

406 Southport Nerang Rd, Ashmore QLD 4214

The rustic, homestyle treats at Egg Wash Bake Shop in Ashmore make it a popular haunt for locals.

Grab yourself one of their freshly baked individual pies for a tasty lunch, a cute mini version for a quick snack or pick up a family pie with a side of (free, for a limited time) creamy mash for a wholesome dinner that’ll be sure to keep the kidlets happy. You’d be the most popular person on the block if you brought home their berry-loaded cheesecake for dessert, too.

Yatala Pies

48 Old Pacific Hwy, Yatala QLD 4207

Yatala’s iconic bakehouse has been serving up the goods to happy customers for 130 years now, which is nothing short of impressive. The 3,500 pies that fly out the door each day at Yatala Pies are testament to the power of a good pie, and the best caramel tarts around, in our humble opinion.

The classic plain steak is a great litmus test for any bakery, and the steak, bacon and cheese pie is seriously loaded. The huge range of options means multiple visits are needed to sample the wares. It’s tough work, but someone’s gotta do it.

West Burleigh Bakery

5 Tallebudgera Creek Rd, Burleigh Heads QLD 4220

The small and unassuming West Burleigh Bakery next to the Ampol on Tallebudgera Creek Road delivers an unexpected flavour punch in its pies, with the curry mince a particular fan favourite (warning: it’s a little bit spicy). The mix of perfectly flaky pastry and generous savoury fillings will be sure to satisfy the hangriest among us.
