It’s been quite a year Melburnians, but the party’s just getting started! December kicks off with QV’s new outdoor cinema, a hilariously awkward Xmas portraits pop-up, some K-pop action at the Queen Vic Market, and the city’s epic Big Design Market.
Here are our top 5 picks of things to do this week in Melbourne.
Tuesday 1st December
QV Melbourne Outdoor Cinema Pop-Up
Did you hear? Melbourne CBD shopping precinct QV is setting up a deckchair cinema over summer, and they even want you to bring your pooch! The screenings will run until February 2016, and feature a number of Aussie flicks, Christmas classics, and 80s gems. Bring your pup along on December 12 for a best-dressed dogs comp as part of a fundraiser screening of Best In Show. For all session times and further information click through to QV Cinema.
Awkward Christmas Portraits at Melbourne Central
One word: Yes. Christmas is only weeks away and Melbourne Central is kicking off the silly season with an internetz lover’s dream - an awkward Christmas Portraits pop-up! Queue daggy Christmas sweaters, cheesy backdrops, and awkward expressions from you, the fam and your pals. The portrait pop-up will be open from the 1st – 20th of December. For further information and pop-up hours head to Melbourne Central's website. Happy snapping!
‘Be My Baby’ K-Pop at the Queen Vic Summer Night Market
Don’t pretend you don’t love a bit of K-pop. This Wednesday from 5-10pm you can catch K-Pop divas The Barberettes as they fly in from Seoul and take over the main stage at Queen Vic’s Summer Night Market. Think 50s and 60s American meets Korean pop, fusing covers of iconic doo-wop numbers with retro-inspired beats. We’re sure to be clicking and shoo-wopping the night away.
Friday 4th, Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th
Big Design Market at the Royal Exhibition Building
It’s your favourite time of year, market lovers! The Big Design Market is back this weekend to bring you three epic days of independent designer goodness. With over 230 stalls across homewares, textiles, fashion, furniture, stationery, and children’s items, we’ve got our Christmas stockings at the ready! Food will be provided by some of the city’s best-loved food trucks including Taco Truck, Beatbox Kitchen and All Day Donuts, so you’ll have all the fuel you’ll need to cover the entire venue. For a full list of featured designers and market operating hours, head to the Big Design Market.
Piggy, Poitín & Potato Festival at The Last Jar
The Last Jar and Glendalough Distillery are banding together to bring you a celebration of poitíin – the Irish equivalent of moonshine - this Saturday. Catch the festival from 1-6pm for a chance to learn about poitín (pronounced “potcheen”), how it’s made, and how to slurp it down. A sweet suckling pig spit will be roasting on the rooftop, with piggy and potato platters available throughout the afternoon. Special poitín cocktails will be available for just $10! Entry to the event is free, but bring some cash along to cover those platter eats.
