Well there’s no turning back now, we’re all up in 2016 whether you like it or not. Melbourne is feeling your New Year vibes and has some great upcoming events - including a Mean Girls screening at Rooftop Cinema, a meditation session at MPavilion, the launch of the South Melbourne Night Markets, Friday Nights at NGV and the classic Jeep Portsea Polo.
Here are our top 5 picks of things to do in Melbourne this week.
There is going to be a Mean Girls screening at Rooftop Cinema... I don’t even think I need to explain to you how important this night is. This special evening at Rooftop Cinema might even make ‘fetch’ happen, or at least I’m hoping it does. Grab a bunch of your mates this Tuesday and watch Cady Heron battle schoolgirl politics in the most hilarious/awkward way. NOTE: For the sweet tooth’s there will be Pidapipo ice creams in the bright pink freezer to the right of the screen, how fitting! Book online ASAP to grab a spot. Get in loser, we’re going to watch Mean Girls.
Our favourite mindfulness pals, Smiling Mind, are teaming up with MPavilion this Wednesday to run a morning meditation session. If you’ve committed to practicing mindfulness this year, then get down to the MPavilion in the Queen Victoria Gardens from 8-9am. This ensures that the gardens remain peaceful and quiet for your hour of calm and clarity. As an added bonus, the MPavilion is an architecturally beautiful structure that you get to lay your eyes on whilst zen-ing. This is a free event however booking is essential; click here to save your spot.
There’s one thing that gets all Melburnians to the yard this summer - and it’s not milkshakes, it’s the luscious temptation of street food. With the arrival of our much-loved summer, comes the arrival of another fabulous event: The South Melbourne Night Market. This Thursday is the opening night of its 10-week run, and there is so much on offer including street food, tonnes of market stalls, live music and heaps of cultural entertainment. It’s also totally free to attend, which we love! For full details of food vendors and market stalls visit the South Melbourne Night Market website.
This Friday at the NGV Gardens, Jack Ladder and The Dreamlanders perform their blend of 80s pop punk and synth melodies to some lucky ducks at the NGV. The night begins at 6pm, with after-hours entry to the Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei exhibit and DJ Sets in the garden. Jack Ladder and co. will perform from 8:30pm, and are likely to get the dance floor bangin’. Booking is required and prices vary so visit the NGV website for more details.
The Jeep Portsea Polo is back yet again, so we can finally bust out our crispest shirts and sharpest ensembles for a day of fashionable glamour, horse appreciation and cocktail sipping. Damn Fine Food and Fred & Ginger catering have all your food needs covered for the day - you just need to make sure you meet the ‘summer casual with clean looks and smart detailing’ dress code vibes. General admission tickets are $85, if you are interested in any packages check out the Portsea Polo website for all details.
